Recommendations for the "Best" Delay Plug-In
I used Nomad Blue Tube 3D Delay in Sonar. Didn't use it a lot but when I did it worked well. Now that I'm using SO3, it's tied into Sonar and will not work in SO3. Any suggestions for a similar Delay plug-in or better would be appreciated. I've checked out the WEB and have discounted any plug-ins that use iLok. One that I find interesting is D-16 Sigmond. I'm actually looking for a relative simple Delay, but for the price it seems like it has a lot of flexibility. I know that there are gazillion delays, but I'm looking for the best overall professional plug-in. BTW, I don't do EDM, so I'm basically looking for a good delay that also does chorus, flanging, but not freaking weird stuff (I'm too old). D-16 does this but also does the basic stuff. Appreciate any inputs. Walt

I really Like Unfiltered Audio's Sandman (now there is Pro) for a relatively inexpensive (especially with voucher) delay plugin. There are a LOT of delays out there so opinions are going to be ALL OVER the place on this one. Even the stock delays that come with DAW's are decent when used judiciously.

Thanks! I gave it a quick listen and thought it sounded great! I'll listen to it more tomorrow. I've tried the two Presonus delays that come with SO3 and was underwhelmed... Walt

tkDelay is really good. Simple to ise but very powerful. Melda’s MDelayMB is also really nice once you get the hang of it. When MTurbodelay is released I think that will be the ultimate delay, but its still in beta/alpha. NI replika is cool too.

dubdisciple I'm thinking about upgrading ni replika to full version...
Replika is quite good, full version (XT) is even better - kind of my favorite delay, or at least the one I tend to try first and rarely fail to find lovely and wonderful sounds that fit the bill. The Diffusion mode is pretty much unparallelled. Gorgeous interface, too, if that matters to you. cclarry I really Like Unfiltered Audio's Sandman (now there is Pro) for a relatively inexpensive (especially with voucher) delay plugin...
As above, Sandman is very cool, and I just got Pro (with a voucher ) so haven't really put it through its paces yet but as with everything else in the series - I have Dent and Fault as well - they're innovative, deep and flexible, up for anything from subtle to insanity. Recommended. Chandler ... When MTurbodelay is released I think that will be the ultimate delay, but its still in beta/alpha...
Ah, I hadn't even noticed it, will check it out, I'm sure it will be brilliant! I'm rather a fan of Melda's offerings, I have TurboReverb and it is a universe, sounds brilliant and does everything... I could probably quite honestly never use another reverb. MPowerSynth is nearly the same, a monster. I have heard similar about TurboComp but haven't checked it out. Finally, I got Rob Papen's RPDelay for free somehow a few years back and have used it a bit, it's also a very deep, complex beast capable of full-blown sound destruction, but I find the interface a bit confusing and experienced some instability with it when I tried to automate things, so I kind of stopped using it. But it's a lot of delay for the price (even if you don't get it free) and some of the presets have a special kind of madness to them, so might be worth a look.

I think now that i know how i like to use delays that i could make do with almost any of them.

Consider Objec Delay from AAS, MultiTap from Eventide, RP Delay from Rob Papen, Sigmund from D16 Group and Late Replies from Blue Cat Audio. Each one of those can do something the others cannot come close to doing (well, maybe RP Delay and Sigmund cover a little of the same territory). When it comes to high-end delays, you really cannot have too many, and there's no such thing as a "best" delay IMO - it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Of course, 90% of the time, a simple delay like whatever comes bundled with your DAW will be perfectly adequate.

It really depends on what particular character you are after. To me the best delay plugin is the Nomad Factory Echoes. To my ear it has the most organic sound and feels very natural. Other notable mentions would be: - OuterSpace by AudioThing;
- Delays in MAGMA (another NF gem);
- H-Delay by Waves & Dub Delays by TAL.

Same here, though I probably use it a bit more for delay FX. In fact, I like all of the Waves H-Series, and could probably get along with just a DAW's stock plugins and the H-Series (H-Delay, H-Comp, H-EQ and H-Reverb) -- an incredible set, especially if you can pick them up on sale. That said, I remember just a few years ago Soundtoys EchoBoy was the delay that always won in all the popularity polls. That may still be the case. Of course, if you're like me, it's overkill for the simple delay tasks I need it for.

For tape/bbd delays, I usually use Echoes. I am also a fan of Replika and the XT version is complex enough to have its own Groove3 video. Objeq Delay is its own thing.
I also like to use the delays from GR5, particularly the Quad Delay for its diffusion and Psyche Delay for its reverse mode.

FWIW, I tried the tkDelay demo, and all was okay until I loaded one of the presets (Chorus). It crashed and sent 120 dB (or so it seemed) of noise into my headsets. Having my fingers on the volume knob saved my ears. Needless to say, I removed tkDelay from my computer. Walt

Echoboy is widely considered the standard, and is very popular among pros. But yes, iLok. My second choice would be the Boz Imperial Delay. Very deep, feature-packed plugin. Some others like Replika are cool but a little CPU-intensive. Cheers, Eddie

Wally, which preset crashed tkDelay? I'd like to try it here. tkDelay is my first-call delay and has been for quite a while. Never had any issues with it. The only other delay that matches it is Imperial Delay, but that one's expensive so I'm reluctant to recommend it.

Dave, it was the Chorus preset. The channel (track) that had the plug-in went into compliance and burnt out all the volume LEDs. Stopping playback had no effect. Walt

It just requires the iLok software. Install & forget about it. No dongle required, and the software doesn't cause any problems at all.

Sorry, I could not duplicate your problem, Wally. I tried the Chorus preset here (first time using that, or any other of the presets) and had no issues. However, if I turned the Feedback parameter all the way up I could get it to go into runaway. Which is the same behavior I'd expect from any delay.
