Recommended Bass Plugins for X2 Pro
Hi, I’ve been messing around with guitar plugs in TH2, but I’m not seeing anything in terms of bass plugins. What are you guys using?

No more amp sims here. I typically use Fabfilter Pro Q for hi-pass, UAD Helios for EQ boost @ 100HZ and optionally 2-2.5K click boost. If needed I use Toontrack EZMix Bass Chorus (which also has distortion). I use Toontrack EZMix in parallel with the clean signal. Amp sims for bass have always been a bit too over the top for me. But I have used IK's SVX, that is a nice one.

Guitar Rig is not included with X2. Guitar Rig LE was included with X1. It was replaced with TH2 Producer or TH2 SONAR depending on the version of X2.

I guess TH2 actually has bass settings, but I just wasn’t able to identify them the last time I was in there (Wednesday evening). Yet, reading up on it some more it does appear there are bass presets in TH2. I’ll have to mess around with it some more tonight. Chris

I recently purchased the Overloud Mark Bass VST. I think it's fantastic! I run the SI Bass Guitar through it and get some very convincing bass sounds that sit really well in the mix. I like the fact that it has pedals included also. Download the demo and try it out!

Well, I’ll mess around with the TH2 some more tonight. I have a nice bass amp with a direct line out. I also have some nice outboard gear. In the past I’ve also tracked D/I with a little Beheringer V Bass preamp pedal to an ART DIO and into my trusty 1880. From there I could shape to my heart’s content, but the tracks always came through nicely. So, worst case scenario, I’ve got that as my go-to. My old Johnson J Station has some decent bass presets too, and I’ve had success with that in the past. It would be nice, however, to never have to leave the box….then again, outboard gear can be fun too. Chris

Overloud Mark Bass VST is pretty sweet. Pod Farm (now 2.5) was my go to sim for years, but I find myself reaching for the Mark sim more now.

I use the Audiffex GK Amplification PRO plug. There is a free version that is very powerful. If you can't make some serious noise with this one I don't know what to say. I liked it so much I bought the full version. It's a full blown model of three of the most popular Gallien Krueger heads with all the cabs simulated as well so you can custom build your own rigs from the ground up. Also, a large library of mics to choose from. Very useable as well as affordable. The free version will probably win you over.

Studio Devil VBA Pro! Actually! Hands down, and I've tried them all! Their guitar amp sims are kinda meh IMO, but that bass plug totally rocks. Very useful built-in compressor and graphic EQ as well.
Underrated!

I've gotten some nice results from the Eden amp/cab in Pod Farm. But lately I've been running my Jazz Bass through an Xotic RC Booster direct into X2 and using Pro Channel EQ and compression. I set the RC at unity gain and tweak the EQ on the pedal to taste. The RC is an amazing pedal that works with just about everything. It is kind of a 'more' pedal, it takes what you plug into it and enhances the natural tone of the instrument. For a grungy bass tone I've run the SVT amp/cab in Pod Farm in parallel with my direct tone. I wrote an interesting Bass patch in Guitar Rig 4 using the HiWatt guitar head into one of the 8x10 bass cabs. But overall I get the best tones going the DI route. I just downloaded the TSE plug. Thanks for the tip Jeff. I look forward to checking it out.

I use some of the bass sims in Amplitube 3, but mix them with a parallel compressed DI version, and sometimes push iit through the Studer tape emulation from the UAD collection.

I happen to like the tone of the GK products a lot. I visit the audiffex GK site often hoping for a sale, but never see it. Their GK amplification line (pro and standard) sounds really nice for a vst. I have a real GK 210 combo that I use with a Trace Elliot 115 bottom that sounds great--clear, tight, crisp, punch, but big full bottom. I like the GK vst better demo than the Mark Studio one, but that is just my opinion==not right, just what works best for me. However, I am just fooling around with GK demo; I have not seen a free vst from them. Can you point us in the direction of their free GK vst?

stratman70 Jlien X Guitar Rig 5 Is their a big difference between GR 4 Pro (I own) and GR 5? Thanks I don't own GR4 but here's what the GR5 manual says (sorry it's a bit long): ▪ Two new amps have been created for contemporary high gain lead sounds: the Hot Solo+ and the Van 51. ▪ A new Cabinets component has been created called Control Room Pro. This takes the concepts of Control Room and the original Cabinets & Mics and expands upon both. ▪ In the Filters section, there is a new Filterbank, with which you can create entirely new synth textures with any instrument. ▪ Resochord is a favorite effect borrowed from Native Instruments´ Maschine. It consists of a bank of tuned comb filters which imprint their harmonic content on to any audio signal. ▪ Stereo Tune widens the stereo field of your signal, making tracks come alive. ▪ Two new Reverb components are on offer: the Little Reflektor and Vintage Verb selections. ▪ Last, and certainly not least, is the new Container, a rack inside the GUITAR RIG rack. It is perfect to create complex multi-effect-chains with an easy to use control interface, and brings a whole new level of functionality to Guitar Rig setups. ▪ Sidechaining is a whole new function that makes Guitar Rig even more useful for the studio. ▪ Presets are now saved in separate User and Factory folders. User presets are now saved under Documents > Native Instruments > Guitar Rig 5 > Sounds. Factory Presets can not be overwritten but they can be removed from the preset browser.

It just causes headaches when you want to reinstall the OS and wastes time when you have to migrate to another computer. I think most of NI's stuff needs a major overhaul, they're still living in the past.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback thus far. Initially, I should have clarified a little better as to what I was looking for. All I really wanted to know is what X2 Pro plugins or even FX settings were some X2 users using for bass. I just bought a new computer, monitor, interface, and Sonar X2 Pro; so, the last thing I want to do at the moment is spend more money. Anyway, I’m sure Guitar Rig and a lot of the other plugin options are choice, but I tried some things out over the weekend and found some sounds I really like, running my bass > Behringer V Tone pedal > Johnson J Station set to preferred bass amp and cab sims > Quad Capture’s DI. This gives me at leat 90% of the sound I want right out the gate, and the other 10% will easily be gained once I start mixing and adding Pro Channel’s EQ and comp. In addition, I played around with TH2’s bass amp settings. I really wasn’t digging it very much….way too large, too much presence, and really muddy IMO…..I’m sure with the right amount of tweaking it could be useable, but I just wasn’t feeling it—not when I have the other tools avilalbe. Anyway, thanks again, and feel free to chime in with some more ideas. Chris
