Recommended Guitar Sim For X 1

Hi
Can anyone recommend a good guitar sim for me, I have a line 6 pod and guitar rig 4
I also have the built in guitar sounds with my V-Studio 20, I know sounds are all subjective,
but I'm just looking for something to give me a good thick processed sound, like the sounds
you get from samples you can buy, I don't want to use them, but it seems the only way I
can get a good sound.

Thanks
John

Man, if Line 6 and Guitar Rig Pro 4 don't do it for you, I'm not quite certain of anything that will.

There are a couple of other lesser known heavy metal amp sims out there.

Here's one I've heard good things about.

Like Bub said, the plugs you have there should do the trick. I don't think you'll ever find anything better in software. Spend some time and tweak the sounds a little. Maybe you'll come up with something that suits your needs. I really like the gutiar rig 4. It's not an amp, but it's pretty close.

A little tip, which I have done a few times when I needed something more from the guitar sound: Re-Amp it. Place a decent mic in front of your speakers and re-record the Guitar Rig processed sound back into Sonar (be carefull with your levels and input echo - you don't want feedback). I don't know what it is but an inch of air can really do wonders to the sound.

I used Guitar Rig 4 and Pod farm and hated them !!!!!
You can get Focus Rights Guitar Fx for abou £20 at the moment and I prefer it to Pod Farm and GR4 !

I just bought Waves GT3.5 last week and WOW It totaly blew away GR4 and Pod farm I wont be using them again !

Try the Demo of Waves GT3.5 and I am sure you will buy it :)

Although I disagree with you on the GR4, I agree with you on the GT3 Norrie But when I tried it I couldn't get a satisfying sound for downtuned metal so I left it at that. But for less aggressive sounds it's sweet. It might have been updated since my last encounter with it.

As ProjectM says, you're unlikely to find anything better in software than what you already have. I reckon Guitar Rig 4 is about the best of the software/digital bunch.

Only trouble is, maybe because I'm old enough both to know what a valve amp sounds like when turned up loud and to have owned a few over the last 35 years, plus loads of effects, I can't get on with any of the digital "emulators".

My personal answer to the "good tone without an amp" problem is the Sansamp Character series pedals - entirely analogue, so no digital artifacts or latency and remarkably realistic once tweaked a little. I've a Blonde (Fender) and British (Marshall) used as a "two amp" recording (and once in a while straight-to-PA gigging) setup.

I've owned a 1969ish 50 watt plexi since 1978 (the original owner sold it to me for next to nothing  because he wanted one of the new fashionable transistor amps...), and I've owned more modern EL34 Marshalls as well. The Sansamp British can make a very similar sound indeed and even feels very similar to play through. So long as I reduce the gain a bit, it's far more like my Marshalls than the "plexi" or "JCM800" in Guitar Rig or Pods.

I've also had a couple of Fender amps, and again, the Sansamp can do a very passable version so long as I watch the amount of gain.

I then add in from a bunch of fx pedals as required.

Then again, my idea of a good tone may be your idea of truly 'orrible....

If you want an idea of the Sansamps in use, burgerman666 has some good, lengthy and decently recorded demos of the Sansamps on Youtube. Just ignore any reviews or Youtube demos that have the pedals plugged into a guitar amp - that's not what they're designed for or good at.

    Thanks Norrie, looks very interesting.

Not that I hate GR4, but it does lack a bit for some of the sounds I find myself looking for.
Quite a different selection of gear -  GR4  doesn't have amps like the marshalls, messas etc.

** And the Waves GT3 is only $79 right now for the software only version.

I'm rebuilding / restoring right now due to a hard drive failure, (BUM - remember to do your Backups people !) ...
but as soon as I'm up and running I'll be trying out the Waved GT3.

I think I'll go check the focusrite stuff too :-)

I see GR4 as a amp sim, not a guitar sim.

Musiclab.com have good Guitar sims. Real Strat for Electric Guitar and Real Guitar for an Acoustic Guitar. And they have a newer guitar sim Les Paul or something like that.

I recomend RealStrat and RealGuitar, as I have those two.

I've tried a lot of them.

NI never seemed to work for me.

Waves GTR was the first software amp sim I was really happy with. It's less flexible than the others, but it's hard to get a bad tone out of it. It's like walking in a studio and having a bunch of amps and cabs all mic'ed for you by a top engineer. You don't get much to say about mic placement and all that stuff, but on the other hand, you'll get something that's consistent.

I also use Amplitube more and more. IMHO, there's no reason not to have Amplitube Free on your machine. At first I used it mainly for bass, but the more I play with it, the more I dig it. Plus you can try tons of amps, cabs and pedals and buy what you like. You just grab what you need as you go. I often put a twenty $ in my credits and add a couple of things to my rig for the next session.

Like my ol pal Rain says...GTR is very good.  I particularly like the new Amplitube 3.  And, if you're cost concious, check out the new Scuffham Amps emulator.  Very sweet.

I have GR4 and want to upgrade to GR5, and I would normally recommend them, but due to the Kore 2 fiasco and NI, I will not be recommending any of their products, nor purchasing them as well.

I like your guitar sounds on your recording. I really like your music too. Which did you use on Come on Home? Was it guitar rig 4 or POD?

I like GTR4. I like Trash for some stuff too. I have never used POD. I don't like VST's that make you use a dongle. I do have one Synth VST  that does but I hate it. Also, I like Amplitube for certain sounds.

Hmmmmm....  nobody mentioned Peavey ReValver MK III.V yet.
    OK then, I will!
    I've put many hours in GR3 and GR4 - I prefer GR4.
I've had ReValver MK III.V for about 6 weeks now and absolutely love it.
There's just something about tweaking those Peavey tube amp sims - from clean to dirty and everything in between - that fits well with the sounds I seek in a sim. A great assortment of cabs and a decent array of fx complete the package.
They offer a nice demo to try out..... you may wanna give it a try.

That's the exact reason why I bought GTR Solo instead of the full GTR - it doesn't require iLock. :)

I 've always liked Line 6 products, and POD HD is my go to amp sim now. I have GR4, POD Farm 2.5, a couple of Zoom floorboards (G9.2tt and G2.1u), some Tech 21 stuff, and so forth. POD HD does do highly processed sounds very well, and there are tons of quality effects. Those are not my favorite tones, but for those who want them, they are definitely there. The presets are not so good, so you have to play around with it, but I think POD HD (I have the 500) is much better than any software only amp sim. Things like wah, tremolo, vibrato, and phaser, are easily controlled with foot pedals, and the dual amp tone capability makes it possible to get really big sounds.

Take at look at it if it sounds like something that would work for you.

I have waves, GR and Amplitube 3 and amplitube is the only one I use nowadays. Sounds more real to me. Perhaps differences of opion is due to the style of music you play. I play a lot of Hendrix, pink floyd, jazz (Montgomery, Metheny and Benson) and blues, also slide.

I have GR4 pand Line 6 POD 2.5 and also Amplitub 3.5 which is also 64 bit now and has some nice new amps available through their new shop front facility.

Amp 3 rocks. but then I've got a glut of guitar stuff, I can always find something.

Yeah, I still use a Pod XT live for most of the guitar recording I do. I'd like to get one of the newer ones for the live dual amp thing, but in terms of the core sounds and versatility, it's great.

that's my line 6 hardware too the POD XT Live. Still think its a great POD. Will be a while before I get another. also have an IKM Stealthpedal and the Rig Kontrol from NI. What can I say I get GAS really bad and I have to have what I have to have. Like any trade. there are some basic tools and then theres having a broad repertoire of tools to provide just that little something.
Sometimes the extra little something takes a lot work or a variety of tools or more often than not, both. I like to try for the extra something.

For guitar, I highly recommend MusicLab's RealStrat and Real LPC (Les Paul Custom).  I don't think anyone can touch these.

I also have Electri6ity (Vir2) and it sounds great for solo/lead guitars but cannot emulate strumming nearly as well as MusicLab (in my opinion).  This product takes some time to master but it will do a lot.  Electri6ity comes with amp sims, but they are very basic compared to GR4.

Cheaper to go with Vir2--it is an all-in-one solution.  With MusicLab, you have to buy both guitars separately and then add on an amp sim.  That said, I use RealStrat and Guitar Rig 4 10x more than any other solution when I need an electric guitar.

By the way, RealGuitar is the most useful product I have ever bought, but it doesn't sound like you are shopping for acoustics.

Amplitube 3 is the best IMO, there's even a free cut down version where you can buy addons when you need it.  http://www.ikmultimedia.com/amplitubefree/features/

Thumbs up on the Acme Bar Gig stuff for hard metal. It's hard to get anything real clean out of them though. The free Shred is great! Someone mentioned Sansamp. There used to be a freebie software clone of Sansamp called NoAmp online. I've used many times with some good results. I have GTR3 and 4. I use them a little but I always end up going back to Amplitube. The new version with the amp shop is unbelievable. Get Amplitube Free and give it a try. BTW, when you are recording into the amp sim you are recording just the raw untreated guitar track. What I do to save time is record my track with the plug to get a sound I'm comfortable tracking with. When I get to the studio, we break out all the amps in the room. I remove the plug. Output the guitar track into a real amp in the room. Then we try all sorts of combinations of amps, speakers, mics, etc. This is what the previous post was about. It is called re-amping. He is right! You will never get the sound out of a plugin or pedal that you will running thru an amp in a good room with a great mic on it. Even if you only have one decent amp, try re-amping. The air in that sound makes all the difference.

I have GR4, AmpTube Live, Gearbox, & PodFarm. But since I was lead to the free amp sims out there, I rarely use the big guys anymore.

AcmeBarGig offers some great amps. Some are free. The rest a very low cost but very high in quality. Headcase gets a better feedback/harmonics sound than any of the ones I have. It's the best. Very easy to get  a heavy sound. It also has one of the best chorus that comes with it.

You can also visit GuitarAmpModeling. Look at the "Free Amp Sims" forum. There you will find some really terrific free stuff.  I highly recommend the TSE808 "foot pedal sim" This thing is really nice!! That along with the Ignite amp sim can get you some really good classic sound!!!

Maybe it's because I've been at it for so long and I'm getting old or something but, man, that's 9 stomps, 4 amps, 5 cabs, 3 mics, 2 rack effects FOR FREE!!

I used to cut everything w/ a little Marshall Valvestate, a Boss Chorus and a wah, using a 57. On tape. That's it. Recording my bigger tube amps was not an option. Still managed to get a wide variety of tones from that humble rig. I think we're spoiled these days.

You are correct here. But I don't have a great room. I have great amps, I have great mics. But all I have is my house. And none of the rooms work! Just my luck!!

But AcmeBarGig has three programs (two are free) that simulate what you are talking about. And they do a very respectable job at it. One program is called Mimc. Another is Filter Cabs. And the last one is iFace. These offer some of the best solutions for getting that mic'd amp sound. Try them. All three prgrams have something called "Tonal Correction". This is one feature of these programs you don't want to leave alone!! Try it and you will be amazed.

The work that the ABG team is doing is really something to watch.
