I want to be able to put a DVD in the drive and have Sonar record the sound - how can I do that? Thanks - rev

Depends on your soundcard. If it has "What-U-hear" or "Stereo mix" setting, it should work. There are recorder apps, also free ones, which can record any audio that is played back. If it's not a protected DVD, you could also try dragging its audio folder separately. I've never tried, but that could be possible without a decrypting program.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

It's the MOTU Traveler and it does have a Stereo Mix setting in its app. Sonar records nothing from the DVD using all the settings that work for creating a song. So I tried Audacity. I get a great recording with the mic but extremely low volume and poor quality from the DVD. I'm afraid of playing with the Audacity configuration because I don't want to upset settings in Sonar. (The AUDIO_TS folder on a DVD contains no files)

You have to rip audio from CDs and DVDs. There are tools on the web for doing that. Search for DVD ripper.

If anyone has specific instructions on how to get Sonar to do this, I'd very much appreciate it. System: * Asus P6T Mobo * Quad Core 3.33 Intel chip * 12 gig RAM * MOTU Traveler Audio Interface via Firewire Thanks - rev

Dave: I'm aware of the tools but I think it's ridiculous that we have a flagship sound recording software that can't record what I'm hearing! I don't understand why Inputs 1 and 2 (that I'm listening to) are not recognized by Sonar in this context. My instruments, virtual instruments and plugs all work fine so why can't I select those track inputs and press Record? This is like having MS Word and getting Notepad to help you out!

It isn't so much in the software, but in the audio interface. This sort of thing is easy to do it if you have a mixer. What other audio interface do you have in addition to the Motu? Maybe you could make another audio device the default Windows playback device and plug the outut of that device into inputs of the Motu. I know it's not an elegant solution but the type of software, and the Moto interface, weren't designed with copying the audio off of cd's or dvd's in mind. I'm not sure what you mean by "Inputs 1 and 2 (that I'm listening to) are not recognized by Sonar in this context". What is connected to Inputs 1&2? What program are you using to play and listen to them?

I have a MOTU ultralite and I can do this in sonar. saying it's ridiculous that sonar can't do it is incorrect thinking. it's not sonar that can't do it - it's your soundcard software and hardware capabilities. I'm sure the traveler is capable of this as well. in the MOTU AUDIO CONSOLE, set your RETURN ASSIGN to MAIN OUTPUT then set up your stereo INPUT on your AUDIO track in sonar to STEREO RETURN ARM the track and record.

I have an older MOTU 828 MkII with the older CueMix software. In order to capture what I'm hearing, I go to the File dropdown menu and select "CueMix Input Includes Computer Output". Not including the main output by default is a good thing if you think about it.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

This is like having MS Word and getting Notepad to help you out! Its a recording program, not a CD or DVD ripper. Its more like trying to open a spreadsheet in MS Word. I thought you wanted to make a digital copy. If you just want to record it, hook the output of your DVD player or soundcard to the input, arm a track and record it. Watch out for feedback though.

I think the audio on DVD is encoded in a weird format, will try tonight at home. As that would be the best method. Just drag and drop the audio file. But What Dave just said is the fool proof method for systems that don't have "what you hear" recording option.

DVD's have the audio embedded in the video, I think it is a AC3 encoding. So there is no files to copy. Seems there is software to extract the audio but your on your own there. I found this free download,, looks legit but I'm not about to waste bandwidth to try it. http://www.aoamedia.com/audioextractor.htm

yes, sorry, I didn't think about that. I don't record directly from a CD or DVD, I rip them to the hard drive first, then play those in WMP or whatever and record that.

When you rip a DVD with certain encoders , like say AVI, then the audio is converted to a MP3 type format, But I looked at some of my rips and they are the same, Embedded audio. Glad to hear that free software works,, sometimes you get lucky with Google. I'll bookmark it for later messing around. I have the Last waltz DVD ( The Band) and wouldn't mind to just play the soundtrack.

Cactus, I have the double CD of TLW, it's a great soundtrack with some bonus studio tracks at the end of side 2, are they on the DVD?
