Record low speed/ playback faster (like the Beatles did)

Hi All,

Is there anyway to emulate what bands did before the DAW: Record at a slower tape speed and then playback at normal speed to change the vocal slightly (I guess it changes the formant of the vocal, whatever). I'm reading the book written on what The Beatles did in the recording studio at Abbey Road and it's very interesting.
This treatment was done in Penny Lane, to name but one of many and I'd like to try it myself.

Thanks,

Ray (aka Oluon)

Also Week 20 in Friday's Tip of the Week tells how to do fine-tuning of audio.

    Very helpful.

Sorry for the late response; life's chores needed some attention.

I know this can be done easily enough in sonar, but why ?
Why not give us a pitch wheel for crying out loud.

Noel would need to give a definitive answer, but I highly doubt the audio engine was set up initially to do that...and I suspect it would be difficult to change now. Back in 2000, I don't think computers were powerful enough to do real-time audio stretching without horrible artifacts.

Frankly I would rather not vary speed in the project itself because even with today's DAWs, you can still hear artifacts (although the situation is much, much better than it used to be). This is why I'm into the old school varispeed tape-type change, where pitch and tempo changes track each other - no artifacts. For maximum fidelity, I'll keep doing a project at whatever tempo I started, and if I need to do speed changes, will do them to the final, mixed 2-track.

    Hi all,

I would want to try adding a vocal at a slightly slower speed and then mix down to the final stereo.

How would that be done? Would I just slow the project and record my lead vocal and then select all tracks and change the "speed" to the original speed?

I'm not sure this is the same process described in Craig's Tip #20. If there is a twist, could someone give me a step by step instruction. I would appreciate it.

    Thank You,
    Ray (aka Oluon)
