Recording Arm 'on' Creates cracks and Pops, please help!!!

Hi All,
I believe I have the Sonar LE 4 edition which I got with my Samson G-Track microphone about 4 or 5 years ago.  It's worked beautifully up until recently.  The problem is whenever the recording arm is switched ON when both recording and playback, lots of cracks and pops occur.  It doesn't make any difference if the microphone is plugged in or not so I know that's not the problem.  I've also uninstalled and re installed the software and that hasn't fixed it either.  Nothing has changed or updated on my computer that would have any affect.  If I take the recording arm off, then great - its fine for editing and playback, so that's narrowed down to where the problem lies.  But I really want to solve the issue so I can start recording again.  I'm not hugely technically minded so I hope someone out there can understand my description and point me in the right direction.  Many thanks for any help, in advance.

    Welcome to the forum.
    Asking a question like this you should always give your computer, soundcard and OS specs, otherwise any answer is just guesswork.

    So - what are your soundcard specs and what driver mode have youn been using. The USB mic is one soundcard, what do you use when it's unplugged - the integrated chip? They are seldom capable of running a DAW (as seldom as USB mics??). Crackling and pops are practically always due to poor/wrong soundcard drivers or insufficient PC resources (slow CPU or too little memory).

    What drivers are you using and how big buffers?
    You can find that info in the Options dialogue.

    Have you installed any new VSTs lately?

    Packard Bell - WIndows Vista Home Premium Sevice pack 2.  
    Processor: Intel (R) Core (TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.40GHz   32 bit operating system

    USB CODEC used when microphone plugged in, when unplugged, reverts to Realtek Semiconductor High definition version 6.0.1.5610 but doesnt make any difference when listening back through either.
    No Vsts installed.

    Driver mode: MME (32-bit), File Bit Depth: 16, SAmpling Rate: 44.1kHz
    Driver Profile: Stream >16 bit data as 32 bit pcm right justified.
    Buffers: In Playback Queue:4, Buffer Size: 100.0msec, I/O Buffer Size: 128kb

    I think I have listed the info you requested????  As I said it has all worked perfectly for 4 years then all of a sudden.  But the problem only occurs when I arm the track to record, if its unarmed there no problem.

    Your computer surely is capable enough. I wonder if the USB mic could work with WDM or some other drivers. MME is the poorest choice, implemented before USB was invented, I guess.

    Could it be there is just some "stuff" piled up in your computer the amount of which has exceeded the critical limit?? Just speculating. Something has happened when all of a sudden things don't work the way they used to. Have you done the regular household work, like defragging?

    Maybe a security software has been updated automatically and something's changed?? Hard to say.

    Do yoursel a favour, and write the specs in your signature. So you don't have to rewrite them every time you ask something.

    Thanks for your reply, yes I have a fairly decent computer.  Keep it well maintained and defragged.  Scoured updates that have automatically taken place and there doesn't seem to be anything that would have an affect.  It just seems quite bizarre that the problem occurs by clicking that one button, would have thought it would occur regardless, which is why it has kind of bamboozled me!  May try and see if a system restore helps things along at all.  Many thanks for your help.
