Recording Audio Tips

things R going well.. running a new Rode NTA1 thru and ISA One into MOTU Travelite.

I can really get a good handle on mic gain and guitar gain via the controls on the ISA One.

Sometimes when you hit a guitar chord extra hard you will still catch some read on the input meter.  I know it's not necessarily great to add compression to your original signal.

Is there some sort of clipping or gate that you can easily apply right on track input to limit those big spikes, or do you clean them up later on..   I'm sure there are multiple ways to skin this cat.  Answers appreciated.

A hardware compressor on the guitar would help prevent those kinds of spikes. You can't really clean then up later on. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Nothing wrong with adding compression going in. It's been done for many, many years. You just do not want to over do it!

Compressors going in are fine - the better the hardware the better the it sounds.

You are getting digital overs?  Turn down your interface so you don't if you don't have a comp/limiter.  With 24 bits you don't have to record the signal hot.

For stuff you've already recorded, many times a little red won't crunch the signal.  If it sounds OK just don't mix it louder and it might work.

i think hes asking if you can add a limiter right in the track to stop the clippingand the answer is no.you need to add compression or limiting before it hits x1..kinda like x1 has no input control to control your input volume levels.i hope i got this right
