Recording Bass problems

Record the bass at just below or sometimes a little in the red and yet always plays back too low. Have to turn it up which causes a lot of problems. I was told that MC3 had a problem recording bass levels. So...what would be my options without getting another product or multitrack recorder?

What does the wave form look like? Is it filling the track or is it almost a flat line?

If it's a flat line you need to raise the input level.

However.... you did say it's almost in the red.

You could double click the track and select the normalize function..... that will raise the level in the track digitally.

From the top tool bar: Process>Audio>Normalize

If it's recorded at a good level, and the playback level is too low (can't be easily heard when the other tracks play) turn down the other tracks.
Where did you hear that MC 3 has a problem recording bass? It's more likely that your input source (Microphone? Direct in?) may not be the best match for the lower frequencies that a bass puts out.
How are you recording the bass? If you're using a mic, what model is it? What's your audio interface/sound card?

If the tracks are at or in the red, the levels are being recorded.
However, the frequencies where the energy is at may be the problem.
As Greg suggested, the mic, or recording setup may not be ideal.
It's possible the mic is picking up near subsonic sound, that while it may show a high level in the meter, is nearly inaudible.
It's also possible that the mic is fine, but your playback device, ie, speakers, is not accurately representing the sound.
MC3 itself, is mostly a handler. If the sound is there, it will pass it through.
Do you have VoxengoSPAN? If so, where is the bulk of the waveform?
Is it in the 20-50Hz range?
Hold CTRL, and sweep the frequencies, high to low.
Does what you hear seem to match what you see?

I don't use a mic. I go directly through the Xenyx 802. Would it work better with mic and amp? I'm thinkin not cause it would still be close or just in the red recording level. Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe frequencies are the problem. Sound card is Sigma Tel Audio. I go straight bass into mixer and into Dell computer.

MC doesn't have any problems recording bass - whoever said that was misinformed.

it's possible your sigmatel, however, could be causing you problems.  they're not the best for recording anything.

the xenyx 802 as a DI should be fine as long as you don't have a really low output on the bass.

are your recording levels and playback levels the same in MC?  what I mean is that are you recording "some in the red" on the bass track, but during playback the meters never go into the red?

How about a screenshot of the bass wave form in question?

Yep that is exactly the problem Beagle. Some in the red while recording, but during playback meter never gets to the red! What could that be?

it's very possible, especially since you're using your onboard soundcard, that you have the INPUT levels different from the OUTPUT levels in your windows sound mixer.  make sure input and output are both set to maximum.

if that doesn't solve the problem, then it could just be the onboard soundcard itself.  it's not designed for recording and it wouldn't surprise me if this problem were caused by it.

Thanks guys I'll give it a try. The imput and output levels were different, but I haven't tested the result since I changed them yet. If that doesn't work may have to get an external sound card.
