And what are your system specs? Do you have integrated soundchip or SB-card with "Stereo Mix" or "What-U-hear" enabled?.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

I didn't think the realtek on board sound would be full duplex but found this, ( http://www.free-codecs.com/download/realtek_ac97_alc650_audio_codecs.htm) You need to find out whether your on board sound supports full duplex recording. Full duplex means it's capable of playback and recording at the same time. Perhaps I'm out of touch and all on board sound has been full duplex for a while but I would still strongly recommend buying a decent sound card and not using the on board sound. Steve

That all seems in order (if you want you can do away with the outputs you're not using! Just untick them) I'd say your problem lies with the setting in Realtek Ok in your Realtek HD audio manager (should show in your notification area, beside clock, might have a little red speaker as it's icon) In there do you see Mic in at rear panel, mic in at front panel (you may have both or only one) In each of these you should have a record volume fader and a playback volume fader If you do Make sure the playback volume fader is set to zero or more preferably is muted

Steve I believe all the cards on the market, for several years now, are full duplex. At least reading this forum the guys have been multitracking with onboard chips for 5-6 years already, and I can't remember the last time reading about someone stumbling on duplex-problem. But as you say, a proper soundcard is more than recommendable, anyway,
