Recording fine at 4ms but when mixing at 10ms+....

Hey everyone,

When I record at 4ms all is fine with MIDI and softsynths, but when I increase the latency so I can add more plugins, for mixing, I'll get samples dropping out here and there. Such as drums... cymbal, kick, etc... just not playing. Also, if I start the song at different time frames the missing triggered samples will change.

I am running Sonar 8.5 Producer and just changed to Win 7 64bit (ultimate). The softsynth culprit is Kontakt 4.2.3.4914 (latest version) All other info in my signature is the same.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!!!

Rob

EDIT: If I turn the latency back down, it's fine again. But the higher I raise it, the more missed samples I get.

When I tested firewire interfaces these had very different latency reported for input and output. Other interfaces I had were always similar(or close to) both ways.

So when setting certain latencies there were crackles with softsynths with firewire. You could run 20 tracks of pure audio fine, but one softsynth and it crackled.

It seems to me that Sonar is handling softsynths wrong somehow.

Not much of a answer, but have a look if your interface is reporting very different latencies for in and out?

But your problem seems very reverse of the usuall, that shorter latency is ok and longer problem.

    Strange...

Randomly skipped MIDI-notes are usually due to too low MIDI-buffer. In 8.5 it's 250 ms as default IIRC, try raising to 500 ms or so. Your case doesn't sound typical to me, somehow, though, so maybe that's not the culprit.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

I just realized my signature didn't have my DAW listed... VERY sorry about that.  /self bonk

Any more advice would be greatly appreciated. I am not new to MIDI but I am no guru either.

When I open the Audio Options under general.... the reported stats are:

    Input: 5.5 msec, 266 samples
    Output: 4.4 msec, 210 samples

Total Round trip: 9.9msec, 476 samples

I agree it's strange... friggin annoying.
