Recording for a friend...

A friend of mine (the guitar player from the band I play in) came over with his daughters yesterday and recorded 7 songs in 2 hours. One of his daughters is getting ready to go off to college and wanted to capture some recordings before she was gone. The songs were mainly recorded live with a couple of overdubs. I'm working on getting them mixed down but here's one I wanted to share for some feedback...

The Hand Song

It's not an original but to be honest I'm not sure who wrote it.

It's really nice. Sounds good to me, listening on the crappy speakers which are not forgiving.

this is very nice. multitracking..... the way to go for sure.

Just my 2 cents. I love the tone you were able to capture.

I would give the VOX a couple db more.... to let them set cleanly on top of the music.... to my old ears they are almost right.... but setting just a tad to much IN the music. And just a touch more on the high freq to put some crispness and air in the top of her voice.

When the fiddle came in, again, bump it up a bit more so it sets on top and shines. On both the vox and fiddle... not overbearing..... but  just a bit more up front.

reverb, polishing and you have a solid tune there my friend..... good job so far.

Dave this is really nice.   I love the way you captured the purity of it all.  No bells and whistles.  It sounds like a lot of fun to be involved in this special moment.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to listen and comment! I'll be sure to share the comments - they'll be really happy. Herb thanks for the mix tips - I'm hearing the same thing! Recording 7 songs in 2 hours was actually a breeze, because the set-up for each song didn't change much, they were well-rehearsed so they only did 1 or 2 takes of each song, and only a couple of things were overdubbed. We were all on the same page as far as the expectations that this was a "live in the studio" recording, so it was going to be a little raw.

I've got my first mixes of all 7 songs uploaded to www.soundclick.com/tinsley if you want to check out any others. They're coming over in about 2 weeks and recording about 10 more, including one where I'll be playing bass, too, and with an additional singer.

    Thanks again!

This sounds very sweet.  Nice guitar and vox. The string solo could be a little more up front. Some bells and chimes would work well in here.

    Hey Dave
The performance and mix are excellent. Love the raw, live vibe. Youve really done a fine job capturing the tones of the acoustic and violin. The mix is smooth but just a hint dry to my ears. I would add just a . . . SMIDGE . . . of room/space/air to the mix.  If you haven't listen to recordings of NICKLE CREEK already that bit of air would be nice.  Whats not to like a wonderful recording/performance.  BRAVO!

She certainly has potential, to get even this good a recording in such a short time tells me that a little work would really make it shine.

Obviously she has great pitch.... don't we all wish we did.

I gotta tell you Dave, I love when a singer/musician can come in and 'nail it' in only a couple of takes. There's something about capturing that live emotion that won't happen any other way. A talented group of folk you have here and I liked the recording. Never heard the song before, but, it's a good 'un!

    Hey Dave,

Is this an adventure or what. Love this place. I've got goosebumps. This is like "coziing" up to a good book in front of the fireplace. A special and calm moment. Time standing still. Unpretencious beauty. I need to expand my vocabulary.

I was touched. Thank you Dave and your friends for this. I feel like I've just received a gift. Bravo!

Wow thanks everyone for the great feedback! I've got a cleaned up mix of the recordings - just haven't had a chance to upload yet, but thanks for the great advice and encouragement. I can't wait to record the next batch of songs!

I'm glad the raw live vibe seems to have come through on the recording. I basically told them to just play the song like they were in their living room and don't worry about the fact it was being recorded - fortunately they seemed to get past any nerves of recording pretty easily and just performed.

    Thanks again!

Sounds great Dave.  Wouldn't mind just a tad of brightness to the guitar and maybe roll off just a hair of the low end so it's not quite so beefy.  How did you record it?  Sounds great

Actually Mark, that's the same tweaks the guitarist wanted when I gave him a copy of the mix!

The set-up was stereo-mic'ing his Taylor Doyle Dykes acoustic with my two Rode mics, and had her about 6 feet away facing him so the could keep eye contact, mic'd with my Blue Blueberry. Overdubbed the violin with the Blueberry, too. Very simple set-up, really. His guitar has a such a great tone, I spent about one minute on mic placement and hit record. Wish it was always that easy!

    Thanks Warren & Mark!

Hey those guitars are only $3800.  I should go get a couple.  Seriously the recording of it is perfect and only needs some eq tweaks.
