Recording keys tracks for use with a live band

Hi all,

I've been asked to record some keys tracks for use with a live band who don't have a keys player. My questions are:

* Say, for example, a keyboard part doesn't come in until halfway through a song, should I just start my track there? They don't need click tracks from me so I'm not sure how to approach this. It doesn't make sense to me to leave silence for half the song in the track so I assume if I start right from where the keys start they can line everything up on their end. Does that make sense?

This is a new venture for me so any suggestions are great, thanks :)

unless the keys are some kind of a pad, you will absolutely need a click track

Be the first one who thinks that you can

    CDK Greetings,

It depends on which sequencer they are going to use to play back the keys tracks.
If it is ableton live you can have a section for intro, verse , chorus and bridge etc hence if the keys parts are just for the chorus to can just record the parts for the chorus and the person will have to import the same  at the chorus section in their song, however  you need to know the tempo of the song so it lines up perfectly.

If there are know intro verse, and chorus section you would need to record the keys parts and leave the silence at the beginning and the parts will line up perfectly with the song. again you would have to establish the tempo so everything can line up as intended.

As said it's not possible to use midi tracks or audio  without the band playing to a click track.
If you band thinks they can have keyboards without a click track ask THEM to explain how :)
I would imagine it is somehow possible to use hi tech gear that would follow the bands tempo but if the band is none technically oriented forget it and hire a real player.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies.

They've sent me stereo guide tracks with click tracks so that's that sorted :)
