Recording magazine suggestions
Hey...
Do you have any recommendations for print magazines for home recording. I would classify myself as a beginner, not completely green, but not quite intermediate... so I don't want some magazine that would be over my head. Nor do I want anything that targets the "dance music" crowd. I am a lot audio and a little bit synth. Of course it would probably do me good to learn more about sequencing and "in the box" recording.
Any suggestions?

Sound On Sound might work well for you. I thought it divided nicely between beginner and pro, but had a large divide between the two. I bought a 2-year subscription, and was happy for around the first 18 months or so. After that, I found that it didn't often relate to my style of recording, but I think that's my issue, not theirs.
I know a lot of people like Tape Op, but I've never picked up a copy. Probably worth looking into.

Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

For general information Electronic Musician used to be good. Note that I stopped subscribing to it a number of years ago, as its overall total content had declined significantly. It might still be of some use.

Another +1 for Sound on Sound. Apart form the excellent content if you take out a subscription you get a free eSub, thats something i find very useful as I travel a lot and can always access the magazines on line.

it's free and comes in regular magazine format via snail mail. google it and just sign up.
it's not as good as SOS but there are some good reviews every month written by good people. at least one of the reviewers frequents these forums.

Looking for one of your liking you must check Computer Music as well.

Sound On Sound because the automatic eSub gives you access to an amazing amount of back material.
Tape Op because it is plain good reading with little eye candy to distract and as observed by the CH's very own doggy it is free.

As a member of TAXI I get a free subscription to RECORDING magazine.
They just switched it to the online version, so I can look back at the archives as well.
Lots of advertisements in it for gear and software, but some of the articles are pretty decent. Many are aimed at beginners, perhaps too many. But even in those you can sometimes find a bit of wisdom.
Gear and software reviews that I find questionable at times.... more like product endorsements rather than unbiased reviews.
It's free so I look at it.... but I probably would not subscribe.

I cannot say enough about SOS. In depth reviews that are usually ahead of the rest of the pack, mixing advice on real world problems, studio workovers,
I used to get Recording, Mix, EM... Maybe had 10 subscriptions.
I only subscribe to SOS, Future Music (not the same depth at all) and a bunch of guitar mags. I gave up on all the other recording mags as they were no where near the same depth

I'll jump on the Sound On Sound band wagon, too. They have a column for tips on each major DAWs including Sonar.

It's a seriously good read, I've been a subscriber since 1997.
I can't/won't subscribe to any others as I simply don't have enough time to read them.
