Recording midi from a controller, comp, overwrite, or sound on sound?
Hi gurus,
I'm becoming confused about midi recording and which mode to use.
I can record a passage, it looks just fine in prv. If I want to record some more midi over the top of what I just recorded (for example, add some sustain pedal) - it seems to ERASE everything I recorded in pass 1.
When I play it back, pass 1 is gone, or does not play, and pass 2 will play.
It creates another take lane and I see a separate midi prv file on it, that's pass 2
I also would like to hear pass 1 while I "overdub" pass 2 - but pass 1 is muted while I record pass 2.
It does this no matter what option I select in Edit/Preferences/Midi/Playback and Recording - any option (comp, overwrite, or sound-on-sound)
I have tried to RTFM and googled as well. It was doing this on my x3e Producer, and continues to do it as I am auditioning Artist, thinking that an upgrade would solve a certain sustain pedal issue in X3e.
I may have some fundamental misunderstandings as to how to record midi comps . . .

Right click the record button and choose "Sound on sound" For a looping section this will allow you to overdub/hear previous material. When finished, I will then typically select all on that track and "bounce to clips" then open PRV. If layered simply (I.e., not duplicating performances), it makes unwanted notes easily found/modified.

OK, I've selected "Sound on Sound" for my midi recording, and I record something new either on the SAME take lane, or a DIFFERENT take lane, but while I am recording, I can only hear or see my new input I'm adding - the original recording is muted while I am recording the new stuff.
I am trying to record a new sustain pedal over an old piano performance, a performance I did in X3e Producer, but X3 mungs up sustain pedals. I'm attempting this in Artist, so the sustain pedal issue should be fixed.
Question is, how can I hear the old piano performance, and add a new sustain pedal, at the same time?

I just checked, and arming a specific take lane does seem to mute playback of previous takes. Try arming the parent track only and letting SONAR record the pedal to a new lane. You can bounce the lanes to one clip later. I do sound on sound MIDI recording often, but I never arm specific take lanes, so I never noticed this.
I'm not sure that muting previous takes in this case is correct behavior, but the Ref. Guide does say that arming a specific lane to record will over-write that lane regardless of the global record mode, and I confirmed that's the case.

Instant gratification! Thanks brundle fly for the feedback, I armed the parent folder for "Record" and I could hear playback, record on top, no problem. Bounce to clips, all done. Good Thinkin' !!!
