Recording problem with Sonar 23.2.0.45

Hello,

I just recently installed Sonar Professional on a Windows 10 computer. I am using templates that I made on previous install of Sonar Professional (about a year old.) Everything works (sound is working properly) except that when I press "R" to record on the keyboard, the cursor moves but nothing is recorded.

I set this up from old instructions made on a previous version of Sonar (before most items were moved to the Preferences menu.) It could be that I overlooked an item(s) in Preferences. (Unless something has changed in the Track view in the last few months, that I am not aware of.)

This is very simple setup. A VST plugin generates all music and all of the MIDI channels come into one music track. There is one MIDI track. As I mentioned the VST plugin (Hauptwerk) is producing sound in Sonar, I just cannot record it.

I am an organist and not a sound engineer. If you can help me I would be very grateful. Instructions should include the exact location of the item. If the item is an Icon on the track view screen, it would be very helpful if you could describe where it is and what it looks like.

Many, many thanks,
Randall Mullin

If the track is a Simple Instrument track (combined MIDI and Audio tracks associated with a single synth output), and you want to record the audio output from Hauptwerk driven by existing MIDI, you'll need to right-click the track, choose 'Split Instrument Track', and then Arm the audio track instead of the MIDI track.

But there's no need to record a soft synth's output in real time, you can just Freeze, Bounce or Export to render the audio much faster than real time.

    Hi Brundlefly,

Thanks for the quick response. I am sorry that I did not completely explain the issue. I want to create a MIDI File, which I can edit and then Bounce to Clips to make a WAV file. I did arm the Sound track and it did create a sound file, but the MIDI track, when armed, did not. I have included a picture of my track view to help you understand what I am dealing with.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hallo!  To obtain sound on hauptwerk track ....you must set the output (O) of the midi track as hauptwerk out! The input of the midi track must be set as none...or as your keyboard....it doesn't matter...

    I agree with siodanescu,
I could be wrong but looking at your screen shot( nice hi res by the way  You'd be better off using the windows snipping tool to take a screenshot)
Anyway, the input of your midi source should be your keyboard (the drop down menu in the track will allow you to choose) and the output should be routed to the VST plug in synth.

In other words, this appears to look like a routing issue.

    Hello all,
Although the track setup is simple, this is a bit more complicated than a standard setup. The thing to keep in mind is that this template which is pictured in the link above recorded MIDI in Sonar Professional 21.3.0.14. I have not changed anything on it since then.

I do not understand the unusual setup but it was put in place because of at the time of the writing of the Hauptwerk tutorial I am using (based on Sonar 8.5.3), Sonar didn't support MIDI sys-ex with VST plugins, hence the use of real MIDI cables. This creates a loop allowing Sonar to record information that it did not before. The MicroLite looping is used to accomplish this.
On the Sonar side in MIDI Devices Input, microlite: Port 2 is chosen. In MIDI Devices Outputs, microlite: Port 1 is chosen.

Unless something has changed in the Track view, this should work as previously. As I mentioned the Preferences have changed considerably from the version in the tutorial  and I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me what to recheck to make sure that MIDI is getting through.

One of the places I would like to recheck is the dialog box that you get when you choose Insert/Soft Synths/ Hauptwerk Virtual Pipe Organ VST Link PlugIn. How do I get back to this dialog box after you have inserted the synch? There is an item there that says "Enable MIDI output." I should have checked it along with MIDI Source, Synth Track Folder, First Synth Audio Output, but I want to make sure I did.

    Again, many thanks,
    Randall

For those technically minded and interested in this problem, here is the Tutorial that I am having to deal with.
    https://www.hauptwerk.com/clientuploads/documentation/Tutorials/AU_VST/HauptwerkAUAndVSTTutorials-UsingSonarForBasicSequencingWithMIDIViaMIDICables.pdf

As you can see, I have had to translate what occurs in this earlier version of Sonar to the present one. The Hauptwerk program is set up exactly as you see in this Tutorial. I did have this working correctly with Sonar 21.3.0.14. I just do not have a copy of the Preference settings from that installation.

If it would be helpful, I can do screen shots of my current Sonar Preferences, but I am not sure if other Preferences other than those under the MIDI tab, are needed for diagnosis.

Again, many thanks for your help.

I have sent an email to Sonar Technical Support asking if Sonar currently supports Sys-Ex messages with VST plug-ins. If they answer yes, I can get rid of the extra MIDI interface and then be able to have a simple installation.

Many thanks for all of your input!
