Recording snake- how long?

Would a 100’ snake be too long for recording? A local music store has a 100’ Rapco 16 channel stage snake in stock and I was thinking about just getting that.

I really only need about 35’ and 8 channels for drums to run from an upstairs room to my studio. I have an 8 channel 15’ foot XLR to XLR recording snake that I could just extend with mic cables but worry about extra noise.

I realize both options would entail using additional mic cables but not sure which is the less of two evils. Also, the snake would provide me with 4 returns that I could send a submix through not to mention the extra channels I may use down the road.

Any advice?

Thanks!
Marco

You shouldn't have to worry about noise with balanced connections, you might have some signal or frequency loss but not enough to worry about, digital recording picks up too much of that stuff to start with a little loss might be good

Thanks for the reply Frank. So you’re saying either way I go shouldn’t introduce enough noise to worry about? Cuz I think I’m leaning toward the 16 channel snake for more flexibility.

No, that's exactly what balanced connections are designed for, to keep noise out of your line. There are many pro studios with more the 100 feet of mic cable in the walls going to the drum booth, not a problem.

Common sense is required here as with any line level cable keep it away from magents, motors, AC cables, floresent light fixtures, etc. If you have to be near AC cables make them cross not lay side by side.

I've been running recordings through a 20 channel 100' snake for over 8 years. You should be more than fine.

    Good luck!
