Recording so Vocalist can hear themselves during recoridng

I have searched the forum and found many threads that make reference to input echo but I am not sure I understand what that is exactly I have never used it and when I look for in Platinum I can't find it. I had a recording session this weekend with an artist and the artist ask if I could put them in the head phones and I was lost as how to do that.  I am recording with Motu Ultralite, so I have been tinkering with it to figure this out and the only way I have figured out to hear yourself in the headphone is to turn trim way up on the input from within the Cue Mix Fx and pressing the Listen option on output for head phones.  The problem is it makes the signal to hot and it clips, so if I turn the trim down on the input the ability to hear goes away but the signal is better.  What is the proper name of this technique and is their a way from within Sonar to say put effects on an aux and send back through the head phones while recording?  I could be way off base but I felt stupid not knowing how to achieve this or a better question with no external hardware is this possible?
