Recordings that astonish?
Having some fun listening to 1920's jazz today and stumbled on this recent homage recording. The "sound" just dropped my jaw: http://grooveshark.com/s/...ng+Oliver/1OUTms?src=5 Are there any recordings you like that seem to immediately grab you and make you feel like you are hearing something special?

Karyn Everything by the CHB? It's astonishing that they hold up after so long? Or that they were even recorded?

Mike - I know this is an obvious one but there are several Beatle's recordings that still amaze me. The clarity and warmth on 'Michelle' or "'Norwegian Wood' still stand up today and they were recorded nearly 50 years ago. The other that always gets me is 'Baker Street' by Gerry Rafferty - listen to the mix - it's amazing.

I used to know a guy who was a pathological audiophile and he told me that in his opinion some of the best recordings ever made were made by the BBC of the Last Night Of The Proms in the 50's.

I'm about 1-1/2 months away from celebrating our two year anniversary for hi-speed. I guess I haven't gotten past the make it super easy to download if you can't stream fast enough mentality. Thanks for the heads up. best regards, mike

1973. Half of it recorded and performed by Todd alone. Manages to keep the tempo moving despite major changes
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

Hi James, fair enough... different strokes for different folks and all. Personally speaking... the sound of the sticks bouncing on the drum skin got me all excited and then the silky smoothness of the trumpet made me ecstatic. I went and read about that record, it made it to #1 on the Billboard Jazz Album charts and number 101 on the Billboard 200. I think I'll be buying the CD. The post was an invite for other folks to post something that they especially like. For example; I am, at the moment listening to Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, a True Star and was glad to be reminded of that album by space cowboy. all the best, mike

another track which is possibly my personal fave ever is 'Walk on the wild side' Lou Reed. You feel like you're right in the studio with them - 2 basses going on throughout, the gentle rattle of the snare, the strings subtley sneaking in, the Stan Getz like sax solo at the end, Lou Reed's brilliant vocal and story telling and when them girl's go doo doo doo. I get goosebumps every time I listen

it's no wonder for me that some old recordings sound better then current - they had tube amps which are better (warmer and less noisy) then today's digital crap. Tubes are coming back anyway.

That tune is either not by Wynton or has been "slightly" altered by Wynton as an homage. It's actually a tune called "Yes, Indeed" written by Sy Oliver. Interesting. Loves me some Wynton tho:-)

Hmmm... I still can't get past Billy Joel and "Piano Man" - that entire album is still the best sounding to my ears. It's like the music doesn't come from anywhere when you listen to it, it just excists. However, there are a lot of albums I like because they sound the way they do. They sound awesome and that can be astonishing too. Like the first Black Sabbath - pleasant, no. Awesome? YES!!!! And the first Slipknot is worth checking out. The drums sound like cardboard, the vocal distorts unpleasantly at times, the guitars are gloomy but oh-lord-in-both-hell-and-heaven does it sound great!

In 2002, Nine Inch Nails released a live album and threw in a second cd featuring mostly acoustic material, including minimalistic acoustic versions of a couple of songs. That bonus CD was called "Still". Some of the old songs versions have this intimate "right there and then" type of sound which really draws you in and make you feel like you're sitting in the studio w/ them or that the guys are actually performing in the room where you are.

I always thought Green Eyed Lady was a great recording. I ALSO THINK SOME OF THE BEST RECORDINGS EVER MADE WERE FROM LATE 50S THRU 60S. LISTEN TO SOME ORIGINAL RELEASE EDDIE ARNOLD, JIM REEVES, MARTY ROBBINS ... SORRY FOR CAPS. PHONE GETS STUCK.
