Redline Monitor

I have been playing with the 60 day demo, and I'm interested in this plugin. I know the developer has passed away, so I'm looking for advice from people that have it, problems ect... and if there is anything else out there worth trying, Thanks!!!

I use it a lot in order to get rough mixes when I need to keep it quiet in the house.  It does what it says.  It basically does away with the majority of the issues that occur when mixing in headphones.  It cannot completely replace using near fields, but I find I can actually get decent mixes using redline through headphones.  Pretty cool little program....

The Toneboosters Surround version is free and it works just fine as stereo only. It has fewer parameters to tweak, but that's a good thing IMO. I use the surround version in Audiophile mode, with the distance set to around 15%.

Devil's Advocate:

I've been using the same headphones for mixing for about 4 years. After all those hours, my brain has been trained so that it just compensates without any conscious effort on my part -- the same principle as training your ears to compensate for your room's idiosyncrasies. Eventually, it becomes automatic. Although I still mix better on speakers, the headphones consistently get me very close. Any surprises usually involve frequency response, rarely spatial inconsistencies.

Now I wonder if a speaker/room emulator might not just totally mess with that conditioning and force you to re-learn your headphones all over again. And what do you do if you have to mix on someone else's system that doesn't have such a device? Would you lose the ability to mix on headphones without it?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I 100% agree with this.

Having said that I've used Isone on occassion for quite a long time and it has it's uses.

The other thing is I just had to get a new pair of cans, as my trusty old ones eventually gave out so I have to get used to those now...

The idea is that it sounds like what you hear through your monitors. Headphones don't sound like monitors but you can still mix with them. This just makes it sound more like a room. It may suit some people.

I haven"t had a room to mix in in about 5 years, and when I did it was just an untreated basement, I want to change this by next year, so right now I'm looking to get by with head phones, and hopefully I can re-train my ears when the time comes....

No doubt, good headphones are vastly better than an untreated basement. Moving from cans to speakers won't be too difficult. The worst part is discovering that everything you thought sounded so good in the headphones, doesn't anymore.

I use Redline Monitor for headphone work in conjunction w/ my small pair of monitors on the road.

While I'm not trying to come up w/ a final mix, it helps me get create a relatively flat rough mix and avoid certain issues. For example, there's just no way I can properly balance the low end w/o headphones. Working in hotel rooms w/ little monitors, you have no idea what goes on down there.

Since I've started working with this plug-in, I find that the work I do w/ the headphones still works 90% of the time when I go back to the monitors - which is something that I had problems with before. I guess I didn't have this ability you have, Dave. And moving from headphones to monitors and back to headphones, I get something that still works when I get back in the home studio.

And for a whole month too -- during the busiest shopping season of the year.

Well, of course everyone needs a vacation, but what situation can't be supported with a good laptop from pretty much anywhere in the world?

Seems odd to me... But I guess not every online developer cares about keeping that competitive edge.

Nah, it's not a special ability. It's part of natural human adaptability, and takes no special talent or effort, just time and a consistent listening environment. It's the latter prerequisite you're missing.

I thought it was kinda odd that the store is closed, but I'm leaning towards the redline monitor, the 60 day demo is really nice, it gives me lots of time to think about it......
