Reinstalling Sonar after a system rebuild
Okay, it happens. Eventually you need to rebuild... reinstall the operating system and then reinstall Sonar. In my case I have Sonar Producer versions right through to Sonar Platinum. So the question arises, how to do this? I don't have the answers so I'm asking to the Forum. Questions I'd like to resolve are: - Do you need to start from Producer X1? If so why or why not.
- If you install a 'later version' first... is it safe/advisable to reinstall the earlier version afterwards?
- With the new Command Centre and the monthly version updates... How do you proceed? Do you save those versions and install them successively from a backed up version of the install (it appears you'd have to do it outside Command Centre).
I've sent a request to support but of course input from users who may have done this already is always going to be valuable. My apologies If this thread has already been discussed. I did a search but didn't come up with anything.

You may need to install older versions if they contain plugins etc that you want to continue using, you may also be able to achieve that for some by doing a custom install and selecting only those items I believe it is advised to install the previous versions first for various reasons, like a newer version of something being overwritten by an older one perhaps. With the command center - all updates are accumulative, so there is no need to install them consecutively I believe, there may be some things that were released for a certain month, bonus/special stuff which will/may be required to install separately.

Problem there is... how to quickly establish which build/version came with which particular bonus add-in. Otherwise you end up with that scenario of having to reinstall an earlier version over a later version. Which may or may not be safe.

Here is a list of plug-ins by SONAR version http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3217211 going back to SONAR 8. The order of installation should not matter. That said, I prefer when starting fresh to run advanced installs of older version of SONAR in order. The only plug-in which requires a minimal install of SONAR is V-Vocal. All the other plug-ins can be selected using the custom pick list provided by the advanced install or each version of SONAR. Also the "Loops and One Shots" bundled with X2 and X3 Producer are the content from the Beatscape synth. The synth was dropped from X2.

Windows 10 and a new SSD make this likely for me soon. I am about to start writing down the order I want to do things in and any things to be concerned about or tips. I believe it will help me through this. If I do a good job the hard part will be done when the plan is done and the actual install will be the easy part. I hope.

Okay, so just ignoring X versions for a minute. What about if I install the latest Platinum Update and then install the Platinum Core Plugins one by one from the start. Does that sound like a reasonable plan?

All Platinum installers are cumulative. Install the most recent version of each and you will have a current version of Platinum. This is what the Command Center will do automatically. By "Platinum Core" if you mean the "Platinum Core Plugins" installers shown along with the SONAR Platinum installers in your account you only need to install the most recent one. If you mean the other installers below Platinum such as Classic Creative FX Suite, Engineering FX Suite, etc., yes install the most recent version of each.

All right, I think I understand that. And yes, I meant the core plugins listed below the version update. So what I'm thinking is: An install of Producer X2 and then the Platinum install. The way I'm seeing it is that I would lose Beatscape and the Blue Verb Suite. But it would keep the re-installation fairly simple. The other programs like AD2; the AAS suite and Melodyne I own separately and can install separately. Does anyone have any comments on the Blue Verb Suite? Sorry, meant Nomad Factory Suite.

I think you are referring to the Blue Tubes plug-ins. They are bundled with SONAR Platinum.

I like them. Great plugin suite. I use at least one (or more) of them in each project. And I only have the "SONAR included ones" on my system. My favourites are the FA 770-3, and the Analog Trackbox. All the best.

If you perform a complete install of Platinum the Nomad plug-ins are installed via the Studio Mixing and Boutique FX Suites installers. If you plan on doing a full X2 install, you still want to perform a full Platinum install or you will not get the updates to the plug-ins which are bundled with both.

You would not lose Beatscape if you install it with one of the Sonar installs that had it. Being dropped does not automatically mean it would stop working, it just means it is not included with later versions of Sonar. The same is true for V-Vocal. If you install a version of Sonar with it included, it will remain on your system, and should still work, though you might try out Melodyne as an alternative/additional one. Bob Bone

Feel obliged to update my progress. What I elected to do was to re-install everything from X1 up. Ironically, I discovered Beatscape as a separate disc install with the boxed copy of X1 (and I don't have boxed copies of all versions). It was a time consuming exercise but in the end I felt happier that I had an installed copy of each version with it's respective plugins. I have the video tutorials for each version and sometimes it's nicer just to go back to that version while you're studying the video. My only complaint with running several versions is that an earlier version will pick up the plugin for a later version and then tell you it's not authorised to run with this particular version. I suppose I can go to the plug in manager and ask it to exclude a particular plugin where this occurs. Also, each version's content folder averages around 1Gbyte and I've assumed it's wiser to leave each version's content folder separate rather than copying everything into the one Cakewalk Content folder ( I welcome any advice on doing this). Last but not least I had a little trouble finding my thread in the forum. Is there any way of quickly referring to your own posts on a thread in the forum? regards, malcolm

Most of the files in each version's "Cakewalk Content" are the same. You could go into preferences and point most of the folders which use "Cakewalk Content" to a single instance. I would keep the project templates separate though. There are some format changes (especially in newer Platinum) which will cause warning messages when using them in older versions. I would also leave Platinum "Cakewalk Content" in tact as it will get updated which will undo any changes made in that folder tree. If you plan on deleting parts of Cakewalk Content, delete folders from the old versions. If you look at the content, the bulk of each version is a tutorial folder. I no longer have X1 installed but X2 through Platinum appear to have the same content in the folder. The tutorials would be my first candidate for purging before deleting anything else. One more thing, if you installed both Beatscape from X1 and the "Loops and One Shots" library from X2/3 you have about 4GB of duplicated loops in the Beatscape factory content and Cakewalk Content audio library loops and one shots folders.

Thanks guys, I found the my posts tab and I'll look more closely at the Content & Loops & One Shots side of things. Oh, and one interesting thing I discovered is that if you change the 'Content Path' in Platinum's Command Centre... it actually changes the content path for all the earlier versions of Sonar as well. I found that interesting... so all I really had to do was to change the Project Folder location for each version. (Which we all know we must do if we want to keep opening earlier projects in earlier versions).
