Reinstalling Sonar

Hi folks.
I wanted to wipe my laptop and upgrade it to 64bit Windows (currently 32 bit)
This of course will mean reinstalling all apps.....including my Sonar.   Do you think this is a bad move right now?  im concerned the product wont activate.
ps.... the reason Im anxious to upgrade to 64 bit is that I downloaded a super drum editing plug in....but it only comes in 64 bit and the trial period is only 7 days.
Thanks.

...to wipe my laptop and upgrade it to 64bit Windows (currently 32 bit)...

Before you start wiping anything, check that the laptop hardware is capable of running a 64-bit o/s. There may well be a good reason why only a 32-bit o/s is currently installed.

Cakewalk Command Center and the servers still appear to be online at this point, so do a backup first, then go for it!

The world seems to have moved on to 64-bit computing in the past few years, and I am glad I joined the 64-bit team a couple of years ago.

It seems that as time moves on, more developers are devoting their resources to 64-bit only new releases.

Thanks John.   I was just a bit concerned Id be left high n dry.   Im sure once everything moves over to Bandlab we will be fine but there is that scary transition period.    Yep, you are probably right.   64 bit is probably going to become the norm.   Thanks again.....and Happy Easter bro.

As of this very moment, the Cakewalk user account are still operating so there shouldn’t be a problem authorising Sonar.

Sonar, Artist, Professional and Platinum are the only programs that need authorising over the Internet. There is a list of products/installers that you can see by selecting Sonar in the Command centre or your online account.

Sonar before Jan 2015, while available in your online account is not available in the Cakewalk Command Centre.

I still have my Sonar Producer X3 installers from 12/31/14 all downloaded from 'My products' and tucked away safely with serial number and registration code, just in case!

I just reinstalled Rapt Pro last night since it had lost authorization.  I don't know any reason my CC SONAR wouldn't download, too.

If your computer support x64. Absolutely without a doubt! Go for it "IF" you have at least 4gb of RAM installed! If you have only 1 or 2 gb of RAM installed Windows x64 will be very slow and sluggish
And having a 32 bit version of Windows can't use more than 4gb of RAM you most likely don't even have any more than 4 gigs of RAM installed, so BEWARE you might not see any improvements in performance switching to x64, and maybe a little less, so you're definitely going to want to upgrade the amount of RAM installed, preferably to a matched pair (2x4gb= 8gb to run in duel channel mode) to at least 8gb. You should see a HUGE boost in power, stability, and track count.
And of course 2x8= 16gb is so much better (if your laptop can support that much RAM), especially if you use sample based DXi's like Rapture Session/Pro and Addictive Drums and or the likes of.

I believe you are limited to 2GB memory per application in a 32-bit OS, even if you have 4GB RAM available to the system.

So 64-bit can help you avoid crashes that may be due to hitting an out of memory situation, particularly with hungry plugins and large sample libraries.  It will also let you access the full 4 GB, because on a 32-bit system you will only see about 3.5 GB available.

x64 bit versions of Window 7,8, and 10 require a MINIMUM of 2 GB RAM to run, x32 require a minimum of 1 GB.
No OS is going to allow applications use all physical memory because they OS needs to reserve and use some for itself. Hence, you can only maybe access 3.5 GB out of 4 GB, and that's actually pretty unlikely to happen with all of the background services, sharing memory with graphics cards and chips, and things like virus protection going on.
Not to mention sharing 2 GB of RAM with any one App. with an x32 bit system is an extremely generous amount of sharing.

A x64 bit system with only 4 GB RAM might be OK for office work, but very sub par for reasonable performance for a workstation such as a DAW, and utterly abysmal for using hungry plugins (needs a strong and stout 4+ core CPU and fast buss speeds) and large sample libraries (needs ASIO drivers, lots of duel channel RAM and fast buss speeds).
If not than things are NOT going to be going smoothly with a starving SONAR if per chance it goes at all.

Thanks guys.  I'll need to get extra RAM anyway as 4GB is a bit low.  BUT..... having said that.  The laptop I use for Sonar has no other apps installed.  I have one laptop (this one) for internet, Itunes, Office etc.
My music laptop only has Sonar installed to try help regarding the whole RAM, CPU resources etc.
I wish i could afford a solid state drive but they are still very expensive.
