Reload of Windows XP causes Reload of Sonar 6 Producer problems
So, I had to reload my Windows XP software which I did after uninstalling all my program software including Sonar 6 Prodcuer Edition. Windows XP seemed to reload well. But I have always had trouble with reloading Sonar 6 (I've had to do this a few times). The software on the DVD goes thru the loading process and seems to hang up at the end where it says "registering files". I've followed Cakewalk's advice and somehow have always been able to get the software working properly. I even tried copying the sonar 6 dvd files to my external drive and reinstalling using those files. My computer is Dell with Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU 2.53 Ghz and 2 gb Ram. The computer is not the problem because I had Sonar working great before. The two main problems now are: It takes forever and a day for even a realitively small file to upload into Sonar and be ready for use. The other problem is the program seems to be working fine (midi files pulled into sonar have no problems in speed and use. But when I try to use a previously applied effect in an audio track by double clicking it, the computer locks up. I think I can eventually work out the effetcs problem, but the long uploading time problem has me stumped. Any suggestions? Yeah, I know, scrap sonar 6 and go to Sonar X1. Problem.... the same two things occurred when I tried using the trial version of sonar X1. CL Nichols

Did you delete the necessary keys from the registry after uninstalling Sonar 6?

it sounds like a possible hard drive problem to me. hard drives can start having sector failures which would exhibit this behavior and you would otherwise get no indication that it has a problem. even if you had it working before doesn't mean that the sectors failing were where sonar was installed before or that the sectors haven't degraded since then. I would advise running a diagnostic on your hard drive from windows tools. you'll want to do a full diagnostic which will require a reboot and the diagnostic to run before windows loads completely on start up.

I had to reload my Windows XP software ??? Why? And what does that mean? From XP disks? From the Dell disks? Dell disks: lots of extra crap that needs to be uninstalled/disabled. And then after doing the windows updates, the computer may still need some drivers from the Dell website. long uploading time??? From the external disk? Is the external drive USB? Prolly need updated driver. Sounds like only USB1 is working correctly. But could be AV, and/or other Dell stuff. Fur Shur do as CJ advised, and then the windows updates, specially the hardware ones. And then stop a bunch of services, change the pagefile settings, and all the other tweaks. And what about the audio interface drivers?

Why would you need to un install software when your doing a OS install? An OS install normally requires a disk format which nukes everything. If your XP disk is old it will take a long time to bring XP up to date. I just did it the other day on an old Toshiba Laptop. I used an XP SP2 disk. It went through 5 bouts of updates and took all day before it was complete. Good news is the laptop is very perky again. Interesting item I found SP2 after initial instal used 1.4 Gigs HD space. After all the updates and SP3 4.5 Gigs was used. Bit of a bummer as the laptop sports a 10 Gig HD. It's just our kitchen computer / MP3 player. But without SP3 the wireless card would not work properly. You'll find very little driver support for XP SP2.

After all the updates and SP3 4.5 Gigs was used::: All the BLUE folders in the windows folder can be deleted. They are uninstall files. Nuke 'em. And a bunch of system restore files were saved. Use disk clean-up to remove all be the latest. Occassionaly disable system restore, reboot, disk clean, enable system restore. And then set the page file to none, restart, delete the pagefile.sys, stop hibernation, defrag about 10 times using windows defrag and auslogics defrag/optimize, and then renable the pagefile: system managed size, and the hibernate file.

I'm a little bit gun shy when it comes to deleting widows system files, That why I had to do the OS, I got carried away with my housekeeping. I always turn off system restore. I ran disk clean up and defraged, always do after OS install, amazing how de fragmented it is at that point. It's amazing what you can run on only 10 Gigs, The music is on a external drive however.

I deleted the necessary ones and others related to Cakewalk. Maybe that's my problem. Which ones should be deleted?

Just want all you hacks out there to know that I discovered my basic problem besides my brain. I failed to reload my USB 2.0 driver for Belkin USB 5 port PCI hardware which I have my ext HDs plugged in to after I had reloaded Windows Xp. I have all my Cakewalk files on the ext HDs. That's why Windows was taking so long to startup and also why it was taking so long to load a Sonar file (the computer was defaulting to a USB 1.1 config.) I still have a locking up problem when I double click on my old effects in an old file to open them., but I think that's because I failed to backup my old effects created in those files before I reloaded Windows XP etc etc etc. And so Sonar doesn't like that and locks the program up on me! Live and learn. Thanks for the advice!!!
