Remastering a classic

Whether or not you know or care for the record, Avalon, by Roxy Music, you might find interesting this article about the production of an SACD disk of it, starting with exhuming the analog multitrack masters. Detailed comments by the Bobs Ludwig and Clearmountain.

Enjoy!

Phil Manzenera's guitar on 'More than this' first struck one morning on the alarm clock radio I had at the time and seemed to swirl around the room then on that 3" mono speaker.

Looks like I'll have to re-invest on this re-engineered edition and enjoy sitting amongst it. Incredible album on any medium.

The opening passage of "Take a Chance With Me" remains on of my favorite 1:20 (one minute 20 seconds) of music ever to come through my headphones. Curious to hear how that intro sounds now (as well as the rest of the album of course).

Guess it's time to own this great recording again.

Avalon was always my last song of the Night at Gigs "Now the party's over, I'm so tired"

    HotCoollMusicGirl,

I find it, dunno a bit odd how people remaster things, or rework them in some cases.. Roni Size (he makes Drum n Bass) has done a new issue of his nu forms album, which is reworked from the original to sound like he wanted it to sound originally. On that specific album, I liked the original and didn't bother to get the new one.

Some things are of the moment, I guess for me. Although friends re-eq/remaster songs now with new technology, they didn't have the abilities mixing wise back then.

I guess it depends to what extent the songs are altered is the key. It did mention about the copy protection on the tapes, that used to be a headache on DAT I recall, but you could strip that off the tape so wasn't so bad.
