Remastering your store purchased CDs. I know some of you do it. Share some tips?

So a while back I asked if some of you guys will put in your old and dusty 1980's head banger CDs and bring new life to them with some mastering techniques.  I was wondering what tips would you guys suggest in achieving this?  I don't have any mastering software other than some of the nicer extra Cakewalk plugins.  Well, and I just purchased X3, so not sure of any of the new plugs in will be good for it.

But, with just the stuff that comes with Sonar and the 4 extra pro channel plugins you can buy from Cakewalk, how would you go about bringing in some new life to an old 80's cut CD?  I should also say that the target file type would be MP3s to play through various audio devices.
