Remix of Janet and me

Janet asked me for a copy of the .wav, but it was lost in a system crash? So I went back in to the project and it was pretty old, I've learned a few things since then, so I remixed it. Janet played the piano and I did everything else, it's not bad.

I'm keenly interested in observations/comments on the ass end? (the bottom) I.e, is it big and round enough? Can you hear the bass well? Should there be more? But I am open to and thankful for any and all mix comments.

Well played, well sung. The piano is huge..... perhaps just a bit too huge. I'm sure if you  tamed the piano a bit the other elements would come out more balanced. Otherwise nice.

That's what I needed man, thanks! I had the piano pushed a bit because she plays it, and it all started from there? I agree it needs to come back a bit.

It's honest and good feedback like this that we should see more of? I'm pulling it back a bit now, and will re-post a new mix in a few. Thanks again for the ears.

Yeah man, I pulled her back quite a bit? She's still out there, because the song needs the piano out there (IMO) But you made a good call, and she's been reeled in somewhat. I really appreciate the critical ears, thanks again optimus.

Please hold comments, I'm going to add more of the bass track as Janet requested. But it will be later today.

Sounds good.   The Badfinger version was much different than the Harry Nilsson or Mariah Carey version.   This rendition captures the elements the original BF version while still sounding modern and original.  Like it.

I sure miss Janet up here.  I don't remember this one and I'm glad you remixed it.  I always loved this song and you did it justice.  Janet's piano is really nice!  Loved the vocals.

Hey thanks very much fellas, Janet wanted me to kick the bass up just a titch so I did and reposted. It's not very noticeable, I can hear it, but you know how it is when you're that close to something. I'm itching to poop one out before Christmas in celebration of the season. I hope you're all doing well, or at least that it's getting better.

I've remixed it several more times. Janet wanted more bass? And if mama ain't happy? Ain't nobody happy... The vocals were a little "boxy" IMO, I tried to address that. And there were some dynamic issues w/the drums, and the vox in places. But we are our own worst critics. I have it mixed about as good as I can do it at this point. However, that may suck? We don't see our own children as anything less than perfect. That's why we need someone else to tell us we have an ugly baby sometimes.

I've always liked this song. I think it really works as a duet. I'd never heard it like that before. Good vocal performances. (I kept waiting for the high notes). Good instrumental performances as well. This song is really dramatic and dynamic and I think you really pulled it off well.

Robby, vocally, I have never heard an "ugly baby" out of you. I like it. Love the blend of duet vocals you and Janet have going on here.

My biggest issue that I always have is figuring out which account is Robby these days. 😃

Nice playing as always from Janet and as noted your vocal is rarely off, if ever.

This mix as of the 14/12/14 works here.

duet?  actually, the duet is Robbie singing with Robbie, not with Janet, unless I'm very very badly mistaken (and I don't think that I am!  )

I remember when you guys released this one.  very nice performances.  I think the mix is really quite good now, Robbie, I didn't hear the ones before you changed anything, but this one sounds pretty great.

Re: Remix of Janet and me 2014/12/14 22:33:52 (permalink)
Thanks Reece, yeah that's me singing with me :-) It is actually two different lead vocal tracks, and they're processed differently. And Harmony tracks, actually quite a bit went in to the vocals, doubleing on each of the lead tracks and harmony tracks, different FX, different panning and EQ and compression, etc. I tend to try different things all of the time (in the kitchen too :-) Janet sent me the .mid file for the pianos, and I bounced them several times with several different pianos, the rest is me. One of my favorite things these days is to play the bass! I love that instrument. I'll never be a Kenny W or a Bats on the guitar, but you don't have to fly on the bass? You just have to hold down the bottom and the groove. (love it) Going to try one with the boy again next I think? He has an idea for a modern pop song (of course). It's a popular cover, but it's filled with lots of FX and tricks :-( I asked him for a straight up rock and roll song, but I have to take what I can get to keep him interested. It's probably going to be 2 months :-( But it's good father son bonding, so it's worth it.

Re: Remix of Janet and me 2014/12/16 04:39:58 (permalink)
    Hey Robby,

Really nice work on this tasty cover of an old favorite, and it's always great to hear Janet's skilled piano playing!

I didn't hear the first few mixes, but now I'm on my fourth listen.  I really like the arrangement, the piano, bass and strings sound great, and your vocals and harmonies are top-notch, as always.

The mix sounds excellent to me and the levels are about perfect, but on this mix for some reason, the "moving, multi-positional" vocal panning is kind of distracting me.  During the first verse, the main lead vocal seems to be wide panned far to the sides along with the piano and there seems to be a hole in the middle where the lead vocal usually resides, then it sounds pretty balanced when the first harmonies start to kick in to the mid-right. Then, when the second chorus kicks in at around 2:15 all the lead vocal and harmony parts seem to collapse to the center, leaving no vox on the sides.  I know this is all subjective and I always love your stuff, but my only suggestion would be to put the main lead vocal down the middle for the verses, and "blossom" the harmonies out to the sides for impact during the choruses.  As always, just my honest personal opinion, and the song sounds fantastic as it stands.

Another excellent showcase of your musicianship and vocal talent, bro!

    Have a good one!

Alright big bad Bob, I think you were right on. I changed the vox in the mix significantly. I think there better, but I tend to swerve around at the console. Thanks again for your input, new mix up.

    Hey Robbaaaaaaay!

Yeah, brother, that's the ticket, this new mix sounds absolutely FANTASTIC!

To me, this latest mix is as close to perfect as can be, and with the arrangement, I actually like it better than the original Air Supply version.  This might be your "technically" best mix ever, bro!

Excellent work, buddy, can't wait to hear your next one with your son!

Nice work, Robby.  Of course the vocals sound great - your range and sense of pitch are very good.  Musically it seems pretty solid too.   If could nit-pick one thing, it's that the snare seems to get lost a bit sometimes when the piano chords hit.   Minor point though.
