Renaming VST plugins

I never bothered to rename my VST plugins in the plugin manager until this morning when I got several plugins displaying on my console view with the same abbreviated name.  That is very handy.  Changed "Virtual Tape Machine" to Tape and "Virtual Mix Rack" to VCC which is all I use in it.

Anyone run into any downsides to this?

Renamed plug-ins will be set back to their original names when a VST reset is performed.

So, if I have the default automatic scan for VST plugins set up, then I'm going to lose my changes?

No, automatic and manual scanning does not reset the VST inventory. A VST reset is a separate action which first clears the VST inventory then performs a scan. It is sometimes necessary to fix problems with the inventory or when additional parameters are added for plug-in processing.

Doing this since years ...my only concern is with big upadtes of sonar , i time to time have to re do it !!! just had to redo this for platnum and also in X1 because the vst analyser changed .....

owner of Waves mercury and a lot of other stuff , imagine my face when it happens and now on 2 verions to mainten (X1 and platnum) and on 3 computers (desktop and 2 laptops)

so just keep in mind this ....the rest is ALL good and a must in book

Renamed plug-ins will be set back to their original names when a VST reset is performed.

I do not rename the plug-in itself (which would be double-clicking to enter "friendly name") yet I rename it in the list of my custom plug-in layouts.

So I get the shorter custom name in my selection list; once inserted I don't care if it's labeled "NI VC2A" or just "VC2 A" ... and the renaming in the custom plug-in layout is persistant between updates ...

Custom layouts is the recommended method but it does nothing for renaming plug-ins in the views, it only affects the menus.

If you use plugin layouts you won't lose any naming customization.
We should add a way to save global plugin name changes and restore them...

Yes please. I do not use custom plugin layouts. I'm an old fashioned guy.
