Request for help with "Insert Send Assistant" and Routing FX Busses

Issue: Unable to select output bus for all tracks. Defaults to 'Master' and won't let me change this setting.

Issue Description and related-info: I am trying to use the "Insert Send Assistant" feature, and am unable to select the output bus... The dropdown under "Bus Output" is blank for me.

Steps Taken:  After reading the help file in Sonar (Go to help and search "How to Route an FX Bus" and it's the first result) and searching Google I was unable to accomplish my goal so I would kindly ask for your assistance ! ! !

I have created the FX bus, and added my Synth into it - but for some reason I can't select that bus as the output for any of my tracks.

So - the real question: How can I take multiple tracks - 2 harmonized vocal tracks - and route them to one FX bus in order to add some reverb for both tracks without having to insert a synth into each of them? (wasting precious processing power and ram + I want the reverb on the vox to sound uniform per Sonar's help file recommendation)

-----------------------------------> Update: 4/16/11 4:56AM PST

I was able to send one of the vocal tracks to an FX bus, however I still can't send multiple tracks to that bus - is this possible? (Please have grace with me this is day 3 or 4 I think of owning any DAW or recording at all.)

I cannot think why you would want to insert a synth into an FX bus - why are you doing it?

The output of any audio track can be routed to a bus.

I must be doing it wrong then - What's the best course of action to accomplish this goal:

Adding FX to multiple tracks simultaneously?

Plazma, the reason I was trying to do it was that I don't think I understand conceptually how it's supposed to work, but I am trying to have some effects added to multiple vocal tracks and wasn't able to.

The output of any audio track can be routed to a bus - for some reason I haven't been able to figure out how to do this.

Your initial post goes through a series of different issues, then resolves to this question. I will try to answer this for you.

1: Insert a Buss track and add a Reverb to the FX Bin.
2: Route the Buss track you just created to the main output.
3: Create a send in each of your vocal tracks, and set that send to route to the Buss track you created with the reverb in it.
4: Make sure the output of each vocal track goes to the main output (or a vocal buss if you have one setup). Do not route the track output to the buss you created in step 1.
5: Turn up each send to get the desired amount of reverb on each track.

(note: for an fx buss to work properly, make sure the effect is set to 100% effect, no dry signal at all. Once you get the hang of it you can deviate from this if you want/need to, but you should start there)

FX Busses are very powerful once you understand how they flow. Spend an hour or two learning this technique and it will serve you well.

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!
