Resistance
Hi all, Here is a track i composed around a month ago. 'Resistance' It's only 1:40 long, so i'm looking for any ideas on how to make it longer. As hard as i've tried, i've ran out of ideas. http://www.reverbnation.com/markstothard Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated. Mark.

Coool, really captured the dynamics here a little 1:40 rollercoaster ride, the percussion at the start is engaging. To make it longer, I say as it ends at the moment (with the percussion) hold that for another bar or two quietly then start introducing some short bow strings with a simple repetitive riff im sure one you get that going you can build it all back up again! First off, I really liked it - can definitely imagine this as film scene music. As for ideas to develop it further...... I'm hearing it move towards a kind of funky wah guitar kind of groove over the same basic idea - think 70's cop show type thing.

There is nothing I would change or add to this. It works great as is.

You almost lost me on the intro but I am glad I listened. Once it got going it made my imagination fire up like a good book. At first I thought, "oh, more DnB dance music. I wonder what it would sound like if you started off with the lead synth, some bells, and cymbals and then brought in the bass and drums? Anyway, I am glad I listened. Julien

This is just GREAT, Mark! Wow! I was reading your bio and chuckling because I usually look at the composers first too. :) It you want to continue it, I would continue with what you have, and then lay down another melody line on top of it. Sort of a bridge or something, then you could always end it by coming back to the part you have here. I love your music!

Incredible Mark. The drums are outstanding in particular. If that is sequenced, I am amazed.

Cian: Thank you very much for your input. Sounds like a good plan. I think i will try that. Paulo: Good to hear from you. Hope you are well. It's funny you refer to the 70's cop show. My mate said it sounds like an intro to a kind of 70's Tarentino movie. I love the sound of the wah wah but have never used it in any of my tracks. That is also a very good idea. Thank you. James: Thank you so much. Julien: I have the same feeling when i listen to the intro, and i know i should cut out a bar or two from it, or dive straight into the main theme. Thanks for confirming that to me. Janet: Thank you very much to. Adding another melody line is also a very good idea. timidi: The drums are indeed sequenced. I used superior drummer. Thank you for listening. Thank you all very much for your input. I have a lot to work with now. Mark.

Totally awesome tune, Mark! I don't think it needs to be any longer. It seems perfect as-is to me. But if you want to extend it, then use the current ending as just a break point to introduce the next part of the song. Bring in a different melody or atmosphere, maybe even in a different key, and eventually build back up into the main theme. Unless you want to make it progressive, then you can derail into a new theme. I'm a fan of progressive so I have a tendency to float towards that direction.

This really smokes, Mark. Great production and mood. The tambourine sounded out of place spacially in the mix because it was so dry.

great stuff Mark - the juxtaposition of uptempo drums with drawn out pads/strings/guitars works really well...imagine this as a scene from a film, you cold go anywhere next...the tune could be used equally in a slow section...something classical composers used to do was invert the melody, for example Rachmaninov's Variations on a Theme of Paganini has a famous tune in the middle, which is the original melody slowed down and inverted (so goes up instead of down etc) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0262kjYLPr4 main theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfItd8ec5xc slow theme

Cool piece just the way it is, really. Loved the way it built out, and if you had to extend it, I'd think about returning to the start of that part where it starts building, possibly with some variations on the theme. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the tambourine, but other than that, it was really good.

Hi Mark, This sounds great. If you have to make it longer I like Paulo's suggestion about the wah-wha/70's theme...but I think it's perfect the way it is.

Mark, Very cool tune, lots of power in this for sure. I like it just as it is. I have always wanted to do a song where the tune slows down like a phonograph being stopped by putting your hand on it. Maybe something like that towards the end of what you have now and then kick in with something totally off the wall! I'm a big fan of changing up in midstream but not sure how you feel about that. Good luck but as I said, cool tune just as it is.

Sounds Great. Works perfectly as soundtrack material. The length didn't bother me at all. If it was in a soundtrack it would probably be as long as it needs to be. Good stuff!

I enjoyed this Mark. " i'm looking for any ideas on how to make it longer" You know they can do wonders with modern medications these days? Kinda had a middle eastern feel to me? You could stop it and do a "break?" where it gets "hardcore Indian/middle eastern?" i.e., a tabla, some other ethnic instruments, a soundtrack of one of those woman moaning/whaling in one of those languages? And then feed it back in to this more orchestral theme? Just a thought. Robby.

Sounds like the kind of music Cirque du Solei might have in their show. the only thing is they change it up more then this did.

Luke: Thanks for the listen and comments, some very good ideas, I like progressive too and might just give it a bash. Rick: Thank you too. I will take a look at the tambourine. Mark: Ta very much for the comments and links. Phil: Really appreciate your comments, thank you. x2 on the tambourine. Will get to work on that. geeare1: Thank you also. I am definitely leaning towards the Wah Wah. Tony: i really like that a idea too, but i wouldn't know where to start with that. I might give it a go though. Thanks. Ed: Juding by yours, and other comments here, it seems the length is not much of a problem after all. I don't know why, but i always want my songs to go around the 4min mark. Thank you for listening. Robby: Thanks for the feedback and excellent ideas. Really don't know which way to take this now. I might take everyones ideas and add them all. The track will probably go on for 40 mins though. Guitarhacker: Thank you.

Hi, Mark, It's really great to see you around the forum again! Although this is short and sweet, it definitely is full of great excitement and intensity, and would surely fit well into any action film or drama. I agree with James and Luke, to me it sounds perfect exactly the way it is. Fantastic piece of cinematic music, and wonderful production! Bob

Awesome intro ... where the drums must rule. Things increment splendidly, like a film intro leading to the opening scene (as is). But to continue this as a song or ending scene ... perhaps: (and this is just a shot in the dark, Philip's strait and narrow experiences in this genre) 1) This feels like it could repeat itself twice or thrice (perhaps after the 1st 8 measure intro or there-abouts) with slight and/or major variations, 2) Additonal chimings, clangings, clatterings, 4-8 measure melodies, 3) possibly with an outro like the 1st 8 measures of the intro or some other climax. 4) Some drums are quite big and I could beg for more (during the middle or ending movie scene) Awesome work!

Another awesome cinematic piece! The drum/bass intro is very dramatic and engaging. Not sure what to suggest to make it longer, I may ruin it for you.
