[Resolved] ONE MORE Feature Better Left Alone

So, I want to Transpose the MIDI Bass part with just 1 click...LIKE I USED TO BE ABLE TO DO by clicking on the #/b Chromatic value in the track view.  But alas! it's nowhere to be found.  I looked in the 2,000 pg User Manual, and found it nowhere, except another convoluted process that I DID NOT need.  So, I defer to the mercy of geeks MUCH smarter than I that haven't been using this product for 25 years.

Here's a REVOLUTIONARY concept for Cakewalk Marketing...Whenever you're going to completely turn a product on it's ear, at least create a short manual for your VERY LOYAL 25 yr customers on where the new stuff is in relationship to the old stuff...THAT DID NOT NEED TO BE CHANGED! IT WORKED FINE!

Sorry for the CAPS yelling, but if you're going to unnecessarily make my life a living hell, then I'll do it right back.  I've got a living to make, and I don't have the time, or $$$ to have a Sonar support person at my side 24/7.

Press I > Adjust Pitch +/- on the right hand strip.

How is that hard? I don't think I've even seen the method you are referring to. Sounds more complicated than what I just described.

MY APOLOGIES, and beg pardon 1,000X's.  I just found it; however, it's not avail in the horizontal track view, and it's under the Arpeggiator features, which makes it easy to miss.

It's not quite as convenient now:

- I to open the Track Inspector
- Select Key+ near the bottom of the Inspector on the right.
- Use +/- keys, drag with the mouse or Shift+Scroll wheel to change by half-steps.

Okay, cool, man. But if you are having a hard time just ask us. Someone is bound to have a solution. No need to stress out. It's bad for the heart. Cheers.

I'm not crazy about the way one does it with the mouse considering it use to be easier before. But because of how it is adjusted. Not its location. I do however like and want the pitch control where it is now. As to the Inspector being closed I rarely have it closed. What I didn't like before was the placement on the track header making it dependent on the size of the header in order to access it at all. When you consider all the widgets that were on it for a MIDI track even though you could place it above or below others it was still an annoyance for me.

It rightfully belongs in the track inspector. I know many don't see it that way but I do and did ask for it to be a part of the inspector years ago.

I completely relate and sympathize with you, King Conga.  It is so frustrating when you use your usual, well learned workflow only to find it no longer works.  Then search the convoluted help with a key word which does not match until you poke around enough only to find you now have to change your efficient and effective methods.  Seems each new X version holds a new set (or subset) of methods and/or key controls/commands.  Having to relearn your DAW does make for an uneasy transition for what should be a better more effective platform.  Add new bugs to that and seems like having the next thing is not so much better.  It's a setback in the effort of efficiency and capability.  Would be nice if the Bakers did include some conversion chart or the like (maybe an easy cheat sheet) to assist us with the change.

I know the Bakers work hard to put out a great product within a fixed time line.  With such major change or implementation such as ARA and VST3, I would prefer that the Bakers take more time to iron things out and check new methods against the already established commands prior to a release or fix.  As now, the Bakers are pushing out fixes this time around which may be more effective if more time where given to test and perfect prior to release.  Changes should be given more consideration at implementation rather than working out the bugs after the fact.  This would help user with the transition.  It can get confusing between what is a bug and what is just a new method.  Particularly when a change to a method is not made known to the user.  These changes are not made know in the manual or help as "new vs old" comparison.  And the method sometimes takes on a new name because of a new feature or the like.  I guess the 'bottom line' is the ultimate decider in most cases.  Hard to hold the Bakers at fault.  I am sure they would like to get it right first as we would.  Making it (the transition) easier for us would be a big plus, nonetheless.

Kind regards,

Ah, I see where the problem is. It sounds like it used to be on the Track Control pane thingie so now pressing I is the extra step. Yeah, they probably could have left that in as a "Custom" option (maybe they have... I didn't check) but it's still only a simple hotkey away.

Also IIRC, John the +/- keys on your QWERTY will adjust a semitone up or down if you first click on the Pitch area within the Inspector strip area so it's the active control.

This is why I have the track inspector docked to the left or right at all times. It's just so handy. Having said that I have 2 screens so space isn't that much of an issue (although I would love a 3rd screen ). Hitting "I" to bring it up isn't that much of a big deal once it's burned into your muscle memory. Having said that, I used to find that I would have to press "I" twice to bring it up...which was annoying. Never worked that one out.

Its really not that simple in the past. The Key +/- was a widget in the track header and was most often inaccessible due to being one of many such widgets on the header. Consequently adjusting the track height was the only way to see it. There were ways to get around this but it would require one to not show all the widgets. We are talking about almost all the widgets you see on the Inspector now.  A very few were on the the old inspector but keep in mind it was not fully populated by widgets. So in order to see it one had to adjust the track height than adjust it widget and then readjust the track height back. If you needed to do this to more than one track it would be an unnecessary hassle. Now the inspector has all controls and makes it very simple.

Remember that the OP started this with where is it kind of question. I believe that once he gets use to how things are done in the X series his work flow will actually speed up.

Nice tip Beep.

Oh yeah, I know all about wrangling with the track pane thing to get at stuff which is why it's nice there are multiple ways to get at stuff (I hardly access the track panes aside from MSR controls and sometimes the FX bin).

What I propose... and I'm sure this has been brought up before, is make the "Custom" option truly customizable. Like you have the list of available parameters and as you add them they show up in order of how you chose them so that way you could have your pitch above your pan or whatever. I'd say make them drag moveable directly on the panes but that would be a little too much fancy coding for little payoff.

Oh and my old DAW was a pain as far as panes too (get it? lol... I slay me) except it didn't have all the other ways to get at stuff because it was archaic and therefore very rigid.

I have two monitor also. But with screen sets, Inspector, Browser, and the associated hot keys, I have Sonar stretched across both screens and just use the hot keys to navigate around.

It took a while to get use to, but once I have it is a much better workflow. Hard to explain why it's better, but for me it is.

Editing in Piano Roll View:  So, correct me if I'm wrong...I used to be able to grab, and slide length of note, or drag it up/down, 2X click on it to see all parameters.  Now I have to change modes to do the smallest of tasks, and change back.  What's the "SMART" way to do it now, since I'm obviously not "normal" anymore.

Let me add a dynamic to this whole general discussion that no one seems to understand about longtime users.  Please understand that I have held on to 8.5 for as long as I can, but I AM (believe it or not) technically mature enough to understand that if I want to keep up with the technology, I too have to change.  But the design flaw with these young geeks today (it's not just with CW) is they refuse to understand the Customer Service side of things. Where LOYAL customers deserve EZ change, and no matter how cute, or efficient they think NEW ways of doing something is so GREAT.  Furthermore, I CAN'T go back, even if I wanted to.  I mean, ask yourselves this: Just exactly HOW MANY features actually needed to be changed to keep up with the latest technology?  I'm no Steve Jobs (THANK GOD!) but I do know enough about PC logic to know the answer to that question is "Not very many features".  Let's use the analogy of a classic mic, like the AKG 414, or any other classic mic, or a classic compressor, WHATEVER...how much can "new and improved" tech actually make those components SOO much better?

We'll, if you re just changing from ver 8.5 - then there *is* a little bit of a learning curve to get used to the "X" interface. We've al done it though - and once you do, it is actually "better" (but it's really annoying while you're trying to figure out where everything has moved to).

Like the guys say - this forum is the place to come to. We've all been through this.... ;-)

Ok, despite the insulting tone towards us "new" geeks everything you mentioned in that post can be easily accomplished with the Smart Tool. You have to sit down for a half hour and learn everything it does in the PRV. Some things I'll admit aren't as intuitive in the PRV with it as I would like either but this is easily resolved by accessing the traditional tools one the fly by using the F5-58 hotkeys or bringing up the HUD by pressing T. I know it's a pain to change your workflow but trust me, with a little reading and poking around you'll be inputting and manipulating MIDI data very quickly.

If it is bothering you THAT much you should probably stick to doing your tracking, composition and editing in 8.5 then bring the tracks into the newer versions for mixing if you want access to the new effects and stuff. I never used pre X series but I do know it was a massive change. Most people got over it and prefer the new methods now. If you don't give it a chance or put a little time in to learn it though you'll never reap the benefits. Freaking out about every little change you find isn't going to help you get your work done.

I hope you find your groove. Good luck.

BTW one quick and easy way to see the data on every note you touch is to put the Event Inspector module in the Control Bar. It will give you all the data you need as soon as you click on a note. No need for double clicking or extra popups to show the data. You can also edit those parameters very easily in that module. I suggest you read up on that as well. I think you will like it.

NOT SO FAST!  Here's another like the other features.  This time I have a quote from the Ref Man. that I tried several times with absolutely NO results.  All I get is the stupid little symbol that looks like a controller.  Here's how the Ref Man says to do it. Pg. 129 if you don't believe me.

Click on the STUPID tool  in the Control Bar. You can also enable this tool by pressing the F5 key
on your computer keyboard. To draw a note with the Smart tool, drag on the grid, or hold down the
ALT key and click on the grid.
To create a note, click on the grid at measure 1.
If you click on various sections of a note, the Smart tool performs a different function:
• Left edge. Adjusts the start time.
• Right edge. Adjusts the end time or the duration.
• Top. Adjusts the velocity of the note, which indicates how hard the note is played.
• Bottom. Allows you to move the note to another location on the PRV grid.
Try to create a melody using this technique. You might find that you can only create 16th notes or
longer. If you want 32nd notes or triplets, specify the desired Musical Time resolution in the Control
Bar’s Snap module.
I tried EVERYTHING!! Right clicking, etc.  So, I can't even enter a freakin' note!!!!NO SOLUTION like, Oh! for those NORMAL, LOYAL geeks we have a module you can load that retains all the technology that worked fine, yet you can still use the 64Bit technology as well.  WHAT A CONCEPT!

Beep, I don't think he said "new." I'm pretty sure he said "Young." Don't think you fall in that category!! Do you? LOL! Nice try though!!

King I hate to tell you, but your about two years late to this party!

Two years ago you would have had ten pages on this thread by now with all sorts of people singing the same song your singing now.

Some of the things I would have agreed with you too, back then. But now I can do things much faster than I ever thought I could. It really is faster. But it takes a good bit of time to learn. At least for me it did.

ABTW, I've been a user since PA6. I stopped upgrading when the first Sonar came out. When I got back in the loop was with Sonar 5, and that was a shock. But I quickly realized that things had come sooo far and I got left behind. It wasn't till Sonar 8 that I really got back in the grove. Then guess what? They did it again! But this time I made my mind up I wasn't going to get left behind. And with a new computer, new Win7 and the new X1, I started over, again.

And I am so glad I did. Pro Channel is worth it alone! But when you throw the new GUI "Skylight" into the mix, it becomes a no-brainer. And there really is more, with more to come!

But you know, being referred to as a geek, with a side-serving of the implication that anyone who can grasp and cope with a bit of change now and then is some kind of sucker... well, I don't think I'm going to bother helping him. Another ranting loon on the internet with the manners of a pig, I am sick of em.

Re: ONE MORE Feature Better Left Alone 2013/11/04 01:16:17 (permalink)
I started with Cakewalk 3.0 (on floppy disk) for sequencing stuff back in the late 80s early 90s.  Finally migrated to PA9...still only used it for sequencing since I was still using analog tape machines.

When I first got X1 back in Dec. of 2011, I was totally frustrated and even stated here in the forums that X1 was OBVIOUSLY geared toward audio and NOT midi.  But my frustration was solely based on my lack of knowledge as to how the X series operated.

Once I took the time to actually play around with X1, then X2 and now X3....it is a dream to work with.  MIDI is a blast to work with, it sees all my hardware synths and racks, and still syncs up flawlessly with my Alesis HD24 when I want to track with it.

So as others have said....allow yourself some time to just "play" with the X series of Sonar and learn your way around it.  I know without a doubt that all these great folks here in the forums were really getting tired of my b**ching, when it was totally every bit my fault because of lack of experience with this new DAW.  But I got LOTS of help and answers here and have come to LOVE working with X1,X2, and X3.

And I will take this time to say THANK YOU again to ALL of the people here who have helped me in the past...!!!

@Grem... lol. Yeah I realized my misquote after I posted but couldn't be arsed to edit. And for the record I'm in my mid thirties so technically still young? Please tell me I'm still young?!

;-)

As to OPs follow up... all those functions work as advertised here. Call support. Something is wrong. Also changing the name of the Smart Tool to the "Stupid" Tool isn't very productive nor is it clever.
