[Resolved] Well, this is annoying
I'm simply exporting audio that consists of midi drums using ezdrummer 2 and a wav file. Everything goes fine until I try to play/edit the tracks in X3 after export. Everything has static. If I try to export from that again the midi is missing... There's no static in the exported file. I have to close X3 then reopen and continue from there. Once I export I have to close and open again or the same thing happens. I'm using the latest update of X3. Any idea what's going on with this?

full on static like white noise? or like your IO is laden and you're machine can't keep up so you get crackles while you listen? If it's the latter, it could be a lot of things. Check to see whether your hard drive is being heavily used by opening up task manager. Your processor? Try using Latency Monitor to ensure you PC is working ok for Real Time Audio.
An offline bounce won't be troubled by latency issues (probably) but playback could be a problem. You can try pushing up your sample buffer for your audio interface and see if that helps.

If you have added a bunch of effects for the mix, you may have to increase your ASIO Buffer size a BUNCH, to allow for latency and CPU spikes added by certain effects plugins. Folks that record tracks with an ASIO Buffer Size of 128 sometimes bump their ASIO Buffer Size up to as high as 1024 when mixing/mastering. You can test the above out quickly, by simply hitting 'E' on your computer keyboard to 'bypass all effects', and then see if it plays back with no issues. (hitting 'E' again after testing this will enable the effects again - the E is just a toggle on/off for effects processing). If playback sounds OK with effects bypassed, then go ahead and jack up your ASIO Buffer Size and see if that takes care of the issue. Please note that if you have additional editing or tracking to do, you may need to swap out some of your plugins, or bypass them during editing/tracking. Some effects use look-ahead processing or just chew up CPU, and that is fine, as long as you only add them after you finish the recording process and move on to mixing. Bob Bone

Are you clipping and your any gain stages? Are you sure that your track routing is correct? Static is a byproduct of digital clipping. It can be also caused by your driver settings or lack of 'Good' sound card drivers. but i think you are clipping because your routing in sonar is flawed and your exporting source is flawed because your track routing is flawed. Copy?? Routings should be: Tracks to the master bus Sends to the bus you want it sent to Buses to the master bus Master bus to main outs 1/2 Then your Export Source should be 'Entire mix' or 'Main outs' CJ

The only plugins used are ezdrummer, amplitube3 and an EQ. I removed the EQ and tried to export the same file. No static this time. So, it looks like adding simple FX causes the problem. The problem doesn't exist during recording or playback, only after exporting the tracks to an audio file. Good stuff know that you guys pointed out. Thanks! :)

It was the LP-64 EQ used on the wav file.

Aha!! The LP EQ and LP Multiband are VERY CPU-intensive. They were designed more as "mastering" plug-ins than something you'd use all the time. In fact the LP EQ was so slow to respond to changes and crackled so much when it did that I believe most people found it unusable. It finally was fixed with X3 IIRC (or maybe it was X2...they blur together, LOL) so that you could use it, but it's still very processor-intensive. Did you do a fast bounce or real-time export? I wonder if a real-time bounce would work better. When the LP-64 was first introduced, I A-Bed it against the Sonitus. The LP-64 had more transparent highs. Because it was such a PITA to use, if I really needed it I adjusted the settings in the Sonitus, then copied the parameter values to the LP EQ.

That's good to know. I did think about bouncing, but for some reason I couldn't find the option to do so. Maybe because I only had one audio file and a midi? Or does it matter?

I should have been clearer. You can "apply audio effects" to embed the changes in a clip, and not need to use the plug-in any more.
