Revelation Song
I write some of my own music and I also play for church at least once a week. The music I write doesn't tend to sound like the music in the church .This is a popular song written by Jennie Lee Riddle that I played a few weeks ago. I like the song and decided to record it. http://soundcloud.com/starise/revelation-song

jbow, seems like a good tune to do and maybe even update. The message is a good one!

Good song.... one of my favorites. It is, unfortunately recorded way to hot, I'm hearing distortion all the way through..... I'd go back and hopefully, the tracks are not maxed out... so you can lower the levels and lower the compression..... man just looking at the wave in Soundcloud I knew it was compressed and loud.... there are no dynamics, and this song pleads for the dynamics. No crits on the preformance, it is good..... the production is what ruins it for me. To loud and distorted.

Thanks Guitarhacker, yeah I was trying to boost levels and likely went too far the other way. I kept my channel levels down around -6db, so I should be able to bring things down. I didn't parallel compress but I did I did re-compress the master slightly to get my levels up. Things either seem to be too hot or not hot enough......hopefully in subsequent mixes I can manage a healthy level without sacrificing dynamics. Initially I had -3db with an RMS of -12/14. I was able to get RMS up to -6/-8. Maybe the -12 was a more acceptable level.

I think Herb's onto something there, but I love this song and you did a great job singing and playing it. :)

Thanks Janet! I thought I was finished with this but it appears that I may need to re- adjust a few things. Maybe I'll repost this after a few more tweaks on my compression settings.

It sure is a nice song. I think (as others) it's too compressed. I felt my temples squeeze while i listened. Vocal is very expressive and arrangement sounds great. There is something about the eq that is off but others more versed in this could probably be more clear.

apart from the compression issue, this one was superb! great performance. as far as track levels etc, try and aim for around -12db on each track, and then on the main outs, make it sure it doesn't clip anywhere...doesn't matter if the master buss is in the red all the time, or indeed any tracks etc, as 24 bit and 64 bit floating point gives plenty of headroom, but the soundcard outs must be kept below 0db...typically i'll have the faders on those around -20db! i also find it easier to export a mix, then use that stereo file to master, adding a little comp/eq and limiting...in metal you can get away with more compression, this kinda thing needs a little less.

I've accidentally over compressed a tune or two in my time of doing this recording stuff.... My solution: I always export the song to a Wave Editor where I'm able to see the wave (as in the post above) By seeing it, I can actually see the dynamics or lack thereof in the wave. At times I can see the sub levels of compression (over compression) that I may have going on in the mix, say on the guitar or vocal... it's pretty evident when there are a certain number of peaks all chopped say 12db down.... Bitflipper has some program or plug that can count the "digital overs" ...as for me, I don't but I try to keep my 0db hits to a minimum. On the song above in the pic, there are about 8 hits on the top and 11 on the bottom.... not a bad day mixing. To me that's OK. So if I export the song and have a huge numbers of 0db hits... I go back and reduce the master compression first, then export again and look at the wave. Since I almost never use compression in the tracks I usually can solve it in the master. Most over compression issues are from people trying to push the volume too hard with levels and or compression...... just say NO. Shoot for a clean looking and a clean sounding wave. there are always ways to bump the volume, but in most cases that is not needed nor is it desired. If you've done all the other stuff right, the song will sound good.
