Reverb Recommendations

I understand this is a personal taste question, but I'd like to hear opinions on the best sounding vocal reverbs and/or settings for female pop or country music—assuming that we are limited to the choices that come packaged with X1.

Other thoughts on reverbs for different styles or for instruments would also be appreciated.

Notes:
1-I usually keep reverb pretty light (like a small plate), but am open to anything.
2-I always had good results with Lexicon PCM in other people's studios, but do not have a hardware or plug-in version in my project set-up.  Before I spend $1,500 on the plug-in, I'd like to see what I can get with X1 freebies.

Lexicon Lexicon.. I'm a little upset 8.5 had the pantheon , And I cant seem to find the .dll for the lexicon in my 8.5 folders.. I also looked on my older sonar discs but don't see a way to just find it.. I was looking at the VST lexicon Pantheon 2 on there site . I was going to buy the Ionix just cause it comes with the Pantheon 2, then return it,, LOL..

Hey, dj...I am new to X1.  Where does one find the Lexicon plug-in?  I don't remember seeing it when I right-clicked in the effects window in Inspector and picked reverb...but it was late and maybe my eyes were blurry.

X1 dose not have the Lexicon reverb sorry for the miss- confusing post.. If you have Version 8.5 its included in there..In x1 you have the sonitus reverb, There's a convolution Reverb too, Check out KvRaudio you might find a freeware verb there..

Seth Perlstein from Cakewalk covered thus.

X1 does not have Lexicon, but if you have a previous version of Sonar that did you can install lexicon and only lexicon and X1 will then have it also. Worked for me happily.

i was pricing the lexicon reverbs on saturday.i think it was almost 1800.00 for the package of 6 of them..i will never understand why 6 plugins almost cost about 2,000..that is really tough on the hobbiest pocket.i am totaly against pirating software.but maybe if they brought the price down on some of these softwares they wouldnt have this problem..ive thought alot about it with sonar as well except for the fact i would imagine sonar being more exspensive than it is..and @400.00 for producer in my eyes is a bragin

If you have the full version of Guitar Rig it has a zero latency IR module.  If you load just that module you can use it as a reverb insert on any track or bus.  That's more and more becoming my go-to reverb choice.

    Good luck

A side note, GuitarRig has alot of pretty cool effects that sound great on a variety of tracks.  Reverbs being one of course.  I missed the boat on this for a while

I use a lot of impulses from:

    http://rhythminmind.net/1313/?cat=182

There are plenty of Lexicon reverb impulses to choose from, and Native Instruments Refraktor supports them, though I prefer to use Reverberate or Pristine Space. I also use some reverbs from the Eventide Space stompbox from time to time.

For vocals, I like the UA EMT 140 Plate emulation quite a bit.

UAD EMT 250 is pretty incredible to my ears. Very lush, transparent and totally pro sounding. All 3 verbs shown here sound really great. http://www.uaudio.com/store.html#reverbs

That said, I also like the Sonitus verb quite a bit if you work it with the filters that come with it. The presets do it no justice...it's a good verb, you just have to experiment with it and eq it a bit.

The Lexicon LXP is only $400 and has 4 of the 7 algorthims if I remember correctly.  I use it all the time it sounds great.  The other difference is it doesn't have as many controls (which most of us would never use anyway).

As far as the cost.  Until recently you had to buy a Lexicon hardware unit to get the real Lexicon sound.  Both the LXP and PCM are significantly cheaper than the hardware version (and you can get to use more than one at a time unlike with hardware).

Final thought, if you have both hardware and software versions, if you drop the price too much on the software two things happen.

One you canabalize your hardware sales.
Two if you drop the price too much people start to think it's an inferior product.

In blind taste tests, for example most people will always pick the wine etc that they are told is more expensive.

So Lexicon doesn't want to be thought of as a hobbiest reverb.  But as a professional one.  One component of their image is the price they set.

Marshall, That's a nice tip and a nice verb. I've tried a lot of the presets but never know what to look/listen for but that one seems really nice. Thanks.

I use "Perfect Space" (free w/Sonar) and Reverb Tools from Studiocat. They are some real good IRs. And for the price Reverb Tools is CHEAP I tell you. You will not regret this purchase!!

And Danny's right. The Sonitus Reverb is good but you can't tell it by the Presets!!

I guess because the OP mentioned Lexicon everybody assumes he's loaded. Just in case that's not the case, PerfectSpace will do the job on Pop/Country vocals just fine.

The IK Multimedia Classik Studio Reverbs (CSR) are quiite good too (currently $229 at IKM) along with those that have been mentioned like Lexicin Pantheon, Perfect Space ( some very good impulses around).

A few years back a member of this very forum spent quite some time recording Impulse files from a whole range of classic hardware reverbs and made them available to us. It was quite a vast collection and ran very well in Perfect Space.

I used to use Waves Renn. Verb a whole lot, but I'm transitioning away from them (iLok!!!!).

For most simple needs I use the Sonitus Verb, it's highly underrated. For my convolution needs Perfect Space does the trick.

Unlike most folks I'm not a verb snob. Generally speaking I try and use delays first anyway, but otherwise they all sound like verb to me.

So cool to get on this forum and see good positive feedback again.  I'm digging back into my vs.8 for the lexicon and checking out my guitar rig pronto!  BTW, I'm also a fan of the UAD EMT's.  Thanks everyone!

rholt- perfect space kind of missed the boat on making things obvious. you have to click on the little folder icon and that will direct you to the presets. To install pantheon from the 8.5 disc, just start the install and uncheck every option except the pantheon

i didn't like pantheon at first until I realized that most presets default to 100% wet. I find that between sonitus, perfect space and pantheon, most of my needs are met. i am tempted to get Valhalla though. It has a unique quality about it and it's a great price.
