If you're coming from a traditional analog hardware environment, it takes some getting used to the idea that on a computer you have unlimited sends and unlimited buses, and to appreciate the possibilities that really opens up.
You can, for example, have multiple reverbs (e.g. a long one, a short one and an ambient one), multiple sends, and you can run all the reverbs into the same vocal bus that the dry signals are going to. And don't forget your parallel compression bus, maybe even a distortion bus.
When I made the jump from consoles and tape decks it took me a while to stop thinking of aux sends and buses as limited resources that had to be conserved.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
