Reverb-apalooza
Well, after reading through as many forum posts on reverbs that I could find, both old postings and new, I decided last night it was time I finally tried out the demos for PhoenixVerb, and the various Valhalla reverbs. I'd heard of them, but never got around to trying them out...so I did...
Wow. I can hear why both companies' products are held in high regard by folks around here: they're all gorgeous reverbs.
PhoenixVerb is awesome. Super-smooth, natural and really clean. I played around with that last night, and I'll be buying it for sure.
Tonight was the Valhalla plugins, and they have really impressed me, too. Bit of a surprise: the reverb I like the most (so far) with Hollywood Strings and Albion One? VahallaVintageVerb. Based on its description, I figured it would be more suited to old school rock and pop, but it's got a Random Space Medium RHall preset that just knocks me out. Airy, with a lovely sense of space, no ringing or muddy resonances cluttering up the sound, a tail that lingers long enough to be heard, but not long enough to get in the way of the next notes. Just a really nice, medium sized hall ambience that sounds open and spacious. With my orchestral and hybrid stuff I anticipated that the natural spaces and hall reverbs would be the most useful and appealing to me...weird, but cool.
Between the various versions, the Valhalla reverbs offer a ton of options and styles, and I'd be curious to hear from Valhalla owners about how you use the plugs -- especially for any classical/instrumental and vocal recording that you might do.
