Re-wire

Hi guys,

I know this is a dumb question, but can you re-wire Project 5 into other kinds of sequencing software made by other companies, like Cubase and Reason?

Thanks.

the rewire spec was developed by Propellerhead Software AB in 1998 so the answer is yes. there are no dumb questions just dumb answers. the current usa political arena is a good example of this.

edit...i should have added as long as the other software's support rewire.

definitely - i regularly rewire p5 into sonar - either to "dump" an arangement (if i've built the song in p5) or rework drums (if it's a sonar arrangement)

Right, i see. Thanks for the replies, but what I don't understand is why you need two different peices of software, like, if you've got Sonar for instance, then why do you need Project 5 aswell, because hasn't Sonar got pretty much everything Project 5 has?

    Thanks a lot.

You can only rewire Reason into P5, not the other way round...Reason is only able to act as a rewire slave not a rewire master. Cubase can only act as a master, so you can rewire P5 into Cubase, but not the other way round.

As to your other question: no, Sonar doesn't have everything P5 has and vice versa...plus, the two programs offer a different method of working. I would suggest downloading the P5 and Sonar demo's (unless you own one or the other already) and you will soon see how different they are in terms of workflow...which one works best for you depends entirely on your preferred way of making music...

Yes, I own Project 5 v2 and I have downloaded a demo of Sonar, and personally I much prefer Project 5's user interface and workflow to Sonar. I find Sonar too fiddly and 'not as easy to use' as Project 5, but I feel like I need an expensive and heavy duty software sequencer for me to be capable of making professional quality music. Is it neccessary for me to splash out on an expensive software sequencer, and has no limitations, or should I carry on using P5, even though it doesn't expand as widely as Sonar does?

    Thanks a lot.

It comes down to whether there some area in P5 where you find it to be lacking a feature that you need in order to compose...I am sure there are people here who make their tracks from start to finish entirely with P5. There are a couple of things that I would like to see in P5 and if these were added, I would probably not need to use anything else...

The term 'professional' is bandied around too much these days...magazines/producers etc are so busy talking about Pro Tools/Cubase/Logic/Sonar as 'professional' that people think they need to have them in order to make quality music. It is not true...I have heard pro quality music made in freeware like BuzzTracker....Four Tet has an exceptionally basic setup for his music, yet I doubt anyone would call his stuff amateurish.

Anyway, what I am saying is, don't fall into the trap of believing that you have to have one of the big 4 sequencers in order to be pro...just assess whether you need facilities that aren't on offer in P5 and if so, find something to accompany it to fill the gap. Don't forget that there may also be other updates forthcoming for P5 (v1 got a big [free] update with 1.5) and this may address some of your (and my) desires...

Thanks xylyx, I'll bear that in mind. I think I'll stick with Project 5 for the time being, it has pretty much everything I need at the mo.
