Rhodes VST

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend an excellent Rhodes VST with comprehensive paramater control?

All I can seem to dig up are sounds from Sonart.cc. Any opinions on these?

I kind of seem to be at a loss in finding this.

Thanks a bunch.

I own a Mark 1 and I would say Mr. Ray sounds and feels the closest overall. Regardless of the price, it's excellent, but I'm recommending it first because it a) sounds great, b) plays great, and c) is cheap. The one downside is that it's just not very flexible (i.e. it only does a Rhodes sound, and doesn't also do a Wurli, etc.). It's available at: http://www.genuinesoundware.com/

Next, I'd say Lounge Lizard (which I also own), but seriously, Mr. Ray sounds better (though is nowhere near as flexible as Lounge Lizard). Lounge Lizard will do convincing Rhodes, Wurli's, RMI's, Hohner's, and let you create your crazy own electric piano sounds, but it does all that at the expense of authenticity. For instance, it does a Rhodes well, but it's never perfect. Same for the Wurli's, etc. Overall though, if you're an Electric Piano nut like me, it's a must have.

Finally, this one sounds amazing (from a purely sound perspective), but it is a pricy sample library and requires Kontakt, it's the Scarbee Classic Electric Piano. Available at www.scarbee.com

Lounge Lizard is outstanding - I use a Nord electro for live work, but I think Lounge Lizard blows it away.

...Mark 1...Mr. Ray...is that it's just not very flexible (i.e. it only does a Rhodes sound, and doesn't also do a Wurli, etc.)

You may be correct about MkI, but MrRay73MkII is much more tweakable and has a preset named "Wurloads".

The electric pianos availabe at from Scarbee (along with the great bass instruments) are the best vst rhodes instruments I have heard with phenomenal attention to detail. They can be heard and demo versions from www.scarbee.com

I was using N.I. Electrik Piano and still am. At first I thought it wasn't so hot and that I needed to go out and buy specific libraries for Kontakt. And I probably still will, but in the meantime I figured out that if I used a basic Electrik sample set with the built in EQ I could get a bunch of real cool *cliche* attack curves by working the EQ and that then I could add a Kjaerhaus Chorus and Reverb and even get a whole lot funkier.

So that's what I've been doing and I'm well pleased.

    best regards,
    mike

I dont think it gets any better than Lounge Liz unless you have a collection of Rhodes and a whirly.

I'm in the same boat as Mike. I bought NI Elektrik piano with their Komplete Classics pkg very cheap. At first listen, thought it wouldn't quite cut it. But it holds up very well after working with it a bit.

I completely agree. Both use modelling technology (if i'm not mistaken) so right there they're ahead of NI's large (2GB) Electrik piano (though it's cool too). Personally I found Lounge lizard to be a little 'dull' sounding for lack of a better word. I guess it depends on taste, but I like the punchiness of Mr. Ray.
