Ribbon Microphones
I think I've read about this video before... but I just saw it today. It's quick and easy to watch. I thought it was fascinating. Maybe some one else will too: http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/SHkOkqnJjy0 best regards, mike

nice... it's always interesting to me how these things we use everyday are made. And also how they work.... that saves me the trouble of disassembling my gear to see for myself....

Thanks, Mike. That was great. I can see now why that particular mic is so damn expensive. I've sung through one, and it's pure silk. You have to either pay 5 grand for the active version or pay a grand for the AEA preamp with the passive version. Either way, it's not likely I'll ever own one. It would be interesting to see the assembly process for a cheap Shanghai ribbon for comparison.

I actually went to their facility when I thought my ribbon was bad in my R-84. Their facility is about 43 miles from my home. It's where they assemble, test and ship from.

mike_mccue Good Boy. So brevity with Breverb fixed it? :-) Yeah it had a turrible crumble in the decay and so I thought it was the ribbon (ripped or decaying in some way). I guess I was not very scientific in tracking down the source of the problem.

I've met the owner of AEA, a really cool guy. He gave me an AEA mouse pad even though it was obvious I probably wasn't a potential customer. Come to think of it, all the mic guys I've met have been pretty cool guys. Or maybe they just never tire of talking microphones.

bapu .... I guess I was not very scientific in tracking down the source of the problem. Driving 40 miles to make an effort to diagnose something says a lot about someone's character. I want you on my team. :-)
