Ride Again Brand new song
https://soundcloud.com/john-vere/ride-again I re strung my 12 string electric and was mucking about and came up with new song. Haven't put a huge effort into the lyrics but it might just be OK. Double track Taylor panned L/R Drums are Strike 2 Bass SI jazz bass modified. Custom 12 string electric / fender Princeton. Vocals SM 58 that's it.

Hi John Sorry I missed this. What a charming song - it has a really nice old school feel to it (not old fashioned). Your vocal is spot on. i would have liked to hear a harmony on the later choruses to add variety. Mix-wise, it maybe lacking in top end slightly but that could be my monitors. The picture on Soundcloud is perfect and put me in the right frame of mind. Really cool edit: I hope 'charming' doesn't come across as patronising in any way, I didn't mean it to.

Thanks Daryl Much appreciated. I posted this at a busy time here and it disappeared down the page. That happens. I plan on having this bandmate of mine come in and go over my originals adding harmonies and even singing lead on some. She is the most solid, in tune and beyond wonderful vocalist I've every worked with. She loves studio work too and has done many recordings of her own in the past. That will be the icing on the cake. ( is that a pun here? ) In the past I included a lot more people on my recordings and I really need to return to that. It's to bad we had such crappy equipment back then. This is why I want to re -record all my 1990's stuff. But then I get side tracked by new ideas like this one :)

Johnny, this has a good vibe and is a catchy tune. That 12 string sounds nice, but could be a tad louder. You have a pleasant voice, and I was reminded of Jerry Garcia by the style. In spite of the sparse instrumentation, this fills the room. Well done.

Thanks Lynn. I'll be working a bit more on this one... I was even thinking of asking Fireberd how much he'd charge for a steel guitar part, that would be cool..

The mix sounds OK here, not my thing really.

Thanks for listening. Funny you should say that John, I wrote this and it's not exactly my thing either. But it just came out like it did without my conscious intervention. That happens sometimes and I like that. I just grab different instruments and dial in different VST's and see what comes out. I tried speeding it up because it kinda plods along, but it refused to go faster..

I like this. It's catchy. Bass could be a little punchier, maybe? I figure its the Taylor guitar, which is nice and chimey, and you might be playing it way up on the neck, but I thought at first that it was either a mandolin or an autoharp. I think you mixed it with the other guitars really, really well. There is a kick drum I think, or is that the bass line? but the other drums, if there are any, seem barely there. Not a complaint, it still works the way you have mixed it. cheers, -Tom

Thanks Tom. As in post #1, I was messing with my 12 string. thats what you are hearing mostly. The Taylor is played with open chords so not high up at all. Bass is the SI bass and a setting I call "mellow" which I use for acoustic songs. I am still looking for a good acoustic bass sound, but they seem aimed at Jazz and not acoustic or bluegrass style. The drums are mellow on purpose

Anyone who takes the time to re-string a 12-string deserves credit Got my toe-tapping, a really catchy song, I'll be singing this in the dead of a sleepless night, I know it..

Thanks James. Yes the 12 string doesn't get re strung often. Its a custom made guitar I designed myself in the 1993. Body is Tele sort of shape sunburst finish. Pups are G&L soap bars SC. Bridge I bought from Carvin is very interesting as 6 strings go though body, 6 end on the tailpiece. It never breaks strings. Neck is all Maple, we cloned a short scale Gibson SG. 12 strings should be short scale or you have to tune them down. Got that idea from Seagull Guitars. And Toms comment about the Mandolin... I need to open the project and look because there is a good chance I did lay down a mandolin track and forgot I did...

I liked it... I think you nailed the vibe. The acoustic sounds great, it has that nice jangle or "stringiness" to it that makes it a good rhythm instrument. Vocals sound good too, the song seems to suit your voice well.
