Ridiculously embarrassing question about plug settings

At the risk of sounding like a total newbie, when you save a project, am I right in assuming that the plug settings for that project are saved within the project file itself?

Well, generally speaking that is true, but if you build a preset, like constructing a multi-rack within Kontakt, then do a re-install, that multi-rack is toast.

Or you can even do silly things like create "new" project templates, with plugins/instruments already installed, like my re-import mastering[chuckle-I have zero idea with what I'm doing with mixing let alone mastering!]but yes it's all saved how you set it.

    I don't want to hi-jack intentionally,but what does apples Logic[and it's plugins] do,that X2 does NOT????

    Does anyone use both?

ut what does apples Logic[and it's plugins] do,that X2 does NOT????
    bobguitkillerleft

I'd say not a lot, as the more you get to know them both, you discover similar approaches to things.

    I'd say Logic has:

    - better included plugins IMHO (though new prochannels seems nice, Logic has space designer, tape echo, EXS24, some nice compressor that are just awesome)
    - better sound library (along with the browser, they really succeeded on making it simple yet powerful)
    - better video support (I tend to blame Windows for that vs OSX)
    - negative mesures (bars before measure 1) useful for video scoring
    - better flextime (compared to audiosnap)
    - better amp simulation (but might be wrong now that X2 has TH2?)
    - cheaper (now that it's 199$ on the app store)
    - Logic actually makes sense on a small laptop (like 13 inches), you can see lots of tracks, as 8.5 used to be.....

It's obvious that some of Sonar's new features are inspired by Logic, (auto-snap to grid, auto track zoom, automation lanes, screensets, multidock (though CW went further with this one in a brilliant way...). but IMHO CW has done their homework to revisit and expand those features (among others) so that workflow and layout are at their best. There is not much to envy Logic at the end of the day.

    Cheers !

And some plugins (Like ReValver) have the very annoying habit of keeping the settings, but not showing, what the preset is. You pick a preset, one made/named by you or one of the included ones. You save and close the project, and when you open it again, the settings are correct, but the preset name is not shown. If you then want to test other settings, and want to come back to the exact original preset, you can't do it unless you remember the preset name. The only workaround is to separately save every used preset by the project name/version. (I don't know if this is recently fixed).

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

They do, but I strongly recommend saving any settings, especially those you've spent a large amount of time programming/editing, or plan to use again in a different project.

I also recommend creating a folder somewhere not on your C: drive called "Plugins" and sub-folders for "Effects" and "Instruments", and sub-folders under either of those with the name of the plugin. And when you save any presets, save in the appropriate folder path. That way, in case you have to do a system reinstall, or migrate to a new computer, you know where your settings are. I saved a bunch of plugin presets on my last computer, not evem knowing where they were saved (apparently, in all sorts of different places, and mostly in the C: drive.

Bob, re: Logic and Sonar, my opinion is that people usually choose Mac v PC and if they choose Mac, the two obvious choices for a DAW are ProTools and Logic.

A "which DAW is better and why" question will usually generate lots of debate and no resolution here.

I think Sonar brings better support and a good bundle of virtual instruments and plug ins.  Although I like Sonar fine, the purchased virtual instrument libraries are the most important things to me.  I could live with Logic, or Cubase, or something else instead of Sonar if I had to, but could not give up RealGuitar, Vienna, Ivory, RealStrat, and a few other things I depend on.

This is something I've been meaning to do for a while because I generally pay no attention to where things like presets are saved and at the back of my mind is a lingering sense of doom for when the time comes that I have to reinstall everything.

Thanks,I keep getting the vibe from utoob, and other forums that Logic is somehow on another level of what's included-especially plugins, but that could be hype, and I certainly have enough to learn with the plugins I now have[especially R-Mix-and how to apply it].

What I find interesting is this new[?] Cubase analyzer thing, where it will "analyze" a mix of a favourite piece, and apply it to a track,buss,master....more hype? I don't know?,but I definitely find Sonars analyzer pretty average, and use the Melda one exclusively,I have to admit, the "analysis" of the whole mix,is a fascination I have, and apparently BIAS had what I was talking about, but now theyr'e gone too.

Hey Thanks vlab, this is almost the exact answer,I have been trying to find out, ever since,I bought a Dell XPS Laptop/Sonar X1 Studio to Producer, and also built a "shop assembled" parts picked desktop, due to latency issues[read user error] I was having, with said laptop, but ALL of that, was still a few hundred AUD LESS,than a 15"MacBookPro with 4GB RAM,and an upgrade[?] to a 7,200rpm HDD.

Then apple go and drop logic to $199 USD,but THAT MBP,would possibly be dead now,as THAT model ran very hot, still,if only it was as easy to make a Hackintosh[the only semi-legal thing I would ever do in THIS digital world-I hate cracked plugs/daws]Here-Australia,from my desktop,as "tonymac" has my exact specs,as being suitable, though that was Snow Leopard only I think?

I've had problems with IK Multimedia CSR reverbs reverting to their default settings after closing and re-opening a project.

There appear to be some issues with Guitar Rig as well. I've had problems with a Reflektor reverb being panned to the left (in-plug setting) when opening the project, despite being panned to the center when saved. I also have frequent problems with NI's Solid Bus Comp being turned off when the project opens. Sometimes it will be turned on but no sound passes through, and I have to click on one of the comp's presets to "jump start" it.

Lately I have been saving plugin settings a lot.  I recently switched from XP to W7 and most of my old projects contain DX plugins that need to be replaced with the VST equivalent.  To make the project functional in W7 I need to open it in XP first, then save the program/patch/kit/whatever of the DX so that I can load it into the VST.
