Riding gain in vstudio 700 causes crackles

Hey guys,

I'm having an issue that I'm hoping to resolve. I have the vstudio 700 R+C. While recording vocals, I like to ride the IO gain and boost it during quieter vocal holds and such, just like every engineer has done with analog gear since the dawn of time.

The problem I have is that riding the gain fader (IO mode on the 700C) introduces crackles in the record. The only way to prevent crackles is to move the fader ridiculously slow, but even then it doesn't stop it all the time. It only lessens it.

Any thoughts?

Eventually, I'd like to get a really good mic pre-amp like a UA, but I really LOVE the preamps on the 700R. They sound so good! I just need this ability.

Cheers,

Never had this problem with the 700C.  But I have had it on older mixers and a good cleaning has solved it in the past.
I also bought a cover for my 700C to keep the dust out.

    Hope you solve this problem.

I don't think it's a problem with dust, but I'll check that out for sure. It happens regardless of the fader I use as well.

What do you use to clean it? I can definitely take a can of air to it.

    Thanks!

Most of the time just dust cloth and air can.

Wouldn't automation after the record also do the same thing?

It's a bit of a different sound. I like to ride the gain up on the pre while recording for spots I know the singer is generally softer.

I also compress and automate in the mixing stage, but there is a certain quality about gain riding on the preamp that makes it sound a little more natural.

    Hey guys,

I'm reposting this from the vstudio forum, just in case there are other opinions here!

LANEY suggested I clean the dust out of the console, which I'll do that shortly. Any other suggestions? The 700C is just a midi controller, I'd think that the 700R would smoothly ramp up or down, even if the control has "jitters". I'm pretty sure the issue also still happens if I click with the mouse and modify the gain via the graphical menu during the recording. I'll double check this when I get home.

    Cheers,

    Hi Josh,

I think what you are hearing is just inherent in the VS-700R in that its digital control over analogue gain staging. What I would do is just set the gain to an acceptable level, and then write track volume automation with the VS-700C after the track is recorded.

Seth, I have a feeling your right. That's what I'm currently doing.

Thanks for the feedback. I hope all is well.

Things are great over here, hope all is well with you. If you get the crackling from controlling the pres form both the VS-700C's faders and from using your mouse, that tells me its not he faders at fault but rather its just how the pres are, as I mentioned above.

Sorry this puts a damper in your workflow, but I don't think there's anything that can be done about it at the moment other than submitting a bug report about it to us. I don't even know if its possible, but it might be fixable in a firmware update. No idea if that's possible for this feature, or if it would even happen, though.

I may be wrong but I think riding the input gain during tracking will change the noise floor a bit too... I'm with Seth on the automation
