Ripple Edit Question

Ripple edit is an awesome addition to SONAR editing features and it could save a lot of time when editing raw speech recordings.

I have just one problem: If I forget current state of the edit mode, I either have to open the Track View menu and see if a menuitem is checked or just guess and try deleting a hole. I desperately need an icon (in Control Bar?) showing the current status; 50% of my guesses go wrong and I have to undo, switch edit mode and delete hole again.

Is there an icon for this already? I checked the documentation but could not find it. Also, if it's in the Track View, I just haven't seen it (would not be the first time ;-)).

Hi. It is done via the menu.
There has been a lot of questions about getting an icon of some sort to visualize on/off state.
All the best.

Thanks... So I am not alone with this.
Btw, if Cakewalk does not make an icon, I could make Duckbar show a toggle button in the Track View menu bar. Anyone interested of 3rd party solution?

Not at all! The only workaround I can suggest for now is assigning ripple edit enable/disable to a keyboard shortcut. Enable, do the edit, disable. That's what I do with Vegas when working with video, even though it has a ripple edit "on" indicator.

I've assigned Ripple Edit | All to the 'K' button (K as Ripple Edit, you know..). It makes toggling faster but makes toggling blind as there is no single pixel on the screen that indicates the status.

Ripple edit is so good feature that it earns its own icon.

I was thinking that maybe a good place would be a button next to the Offset mode button in the Control Bar's Mix Module, replacing the global read automation enable/disable button. Not sure how useful the latter is, especially now that we have Smart Swipe.

Rather than take away a function on the Mix module, I would prefer a change to the HUD and tools module similar to msg 7 even though I currently have the the tools module collapsed. That or a separate mini module with on/off and Edit type buttons. Ripple Edit is not a mix feature.

Hello panup

Yes, I would love an icon to view and toggle state for Ripple Edit. I think it should also include a similar button/state for Auto Crossfade as well.

Re: Ripple Edit Question 2017/09/28 17:00:21 (permalink)
No argument from me. Ripple edit has been the single biggest improvement Sonar has provided this year. At least for what I'm doing now. Sometimes I forget it's enabled and then strange and mysterious things can happen while moving clips. A toggle button would be great but if I wasn't so lazy I would have built my own solution using the many options available in SOnar. A custom key binding would work, but a flashing purple reminder light would help.

Can't really be done with the tools provided in SONAR. Custom buttons lack the ability to show the current state of a feature. The buttons simply run a function.

That or a separate mini module with on/off and Edit type buttons.

I think that would be best, but suggested changing a button because I figured that would be more doable (i.e., appear in an update sooner ) compared to adding another control bar module.

Ripple Edit is not a mix feature.

Yes, I guess that makes it a non-starter. My reasoning was that people get tripped up by offset mode and ripple edit mode, so having them together might make those two functions more front of mind and lead to fewer errors.
