Riviera P-93...
Is on her way. :P As if that in itself weren't enough to make me happy, our furry family has a new member: The second we walked into the adoption center, he got up and greeted us. I took him into my arms, he started purring and licking and practically fell asleep. It was pretty much love at first sight. Plus, he looks exactly like one of our cats, one we adopted last year (on the exact same day that I bought my Les Paul Traditional, incidentally). She's the sweetest thing, so we were under the charm immediately.

I'm quite sure I will. I've been putting a lot of material together recently, and in many case I'm that close to what I have in mind - but the song calls for a big semi-hollow. For a while yesterday I was tempted by a Gretsch which was the same price - chambered body, Filtertrons and Bigsby. I really wanted to fall in love with it, because, you know, it was a Gretsch and I always thought I needed Filtertrons for the sound I had in mind. But as it turns out, the big Epi and its P90's are closer to what I had in mind and they do that jazzy thing beautifully, but I can also go Scotty Moore w/ them, and then beyond. Beautiful.

Know what? I was checking out my FB to see exactly when we had adopted that other cat + bought my LP last year. June 27th. We're pretty consistent aren't we? :P I mention it because I fell on a picture of a Casino I'd posted last fall w/ the mention - after the SG. The entry was dated from 3 or 4 days before I bought my SGJ. And even though I didn't really think about it when I bought the Riviera, I was just thinking about that and searching the web to see how much they differed, especially since this one has the P90's... I guess I'm killing two birds with one stone.

Thanks for the pic Robert - it's great to see its size and how it compare w/ the Les Paul (which is pretty nice too, by the way). I do have a decent strap which I think should be okay. The good news is I've just seen that AMS have a warehouse here in Nevada, in Reno. So theoretically, I should have the guitar in no time once it ships on Monday. Crossing fingers. In the meantime, I'm already enjoying the positive effects of having a new guitar - I'm recording demos faster than ever since I know I'll be re-recording all the guitar parts w/ the Riviera, anyway. :)

Note the plastic "E" on the pick guard. I think it looks kind of goofy angled the way it ships. it was barely stuck on, and I almost got rid of it entirely. But I rotated it, and it echoed the shape if the bout and strings, almost like an Art Deco motif. It transformed from an oddly placed logo to a design element, so I stuck it down.

I didn't like the plastic "E" that came on my DOT. When I pealed it off, it seemed as if it was glued with something that bonded with the plastic pick guard. What ever it was stuck down with, ate right into the plastic. I ended up just buying a blank replacement pick guard to replace it.

Was glad to find out that my guitar had been shipped when I took my e-mail this morning. The "E" seems a bit odd - I'm not too sure what they were trying to accomplish w/ it, especially since that logo is already on the truss rod cover. At one point, I'd found a better deal on the black model. In theory, black should have appealed to me even more but, as is, it didn't and I thought the white pickguard really didn't help, so, for a second I wondered how it'd look with a cream/ivory pickguard. Then it struck me that finding a replacement pickguard for a that type of guitar with 3 P-90's may not be particularly easy. In the end, I really wasn't convinced, the deal passed - which is a good thing because I really prefer the red one. The one thing I'll probably modify is the knobs. Black and gold would seem to make more sense w/ that colour scheme, more than silver and gold. But that's not a priority.

Pretty amazing actually. The most easily integrated kitten ever. We picked him up yesterday at 1 pm and we had a separate room prepared for him, as usual when you bring in a new cat. He spent the day there, sleeping most of the time, greeting me and purring every time I went to see him and play. Took him out once or twice, holding him and showing him to the other cats. When my wife arrived from work, we let him out. He started playing with the others, particularly Syd. Syd doesn't interact much with humans, he's a cat's cat - he bounded with the kitten on the spot. As of this morning, he's running around the house and doing all the crazy kitten stuff. :) The oldest of our cats simply doesn't care. London aka Gisèle Talbot isn't all too happy, but she'll get over it. She did the same when we brought the others. She's in for a few days of being grumpy, but since she spends plenty of time outside, maybe she'll get over it even quicker.

The big difference is the Riviera is semi-hollow (i.e. with a 335 style center block) and the Casino is fully hollow. And congrats on the new additions! I think you made a wise choice by not going the other way round and getting the kitty in red.

Thanks. That's what I read, and I'm guessing that, for now it'll be close enough. Though obviously, a Casino would be nice, eventually. The Bigsby played a big part in my decision - with the exception of the WildKat, it was the only semi-hollow which had it. The P90s were also a determining factor, so the only guitars with both were the Riviera and the WildKat. Otherwise, the Sheraton, the Casino and the Dot Pro were also pretty nice. But ultimately, the WildKat seemed a bit small, and I wanted a big guitar. Also, it has the chrome hardware, which I have a history of destroying in no time on all my Epiphones. I'm sure I'll ruin the gold finish on the Riviera just as quickly, but at least, the pick-ups will be safe. One of the Epiphone models I didn't really think much of but which has got me curious after seeing a couple of videos is the Wilshire. Doesn't look like much (to my taste) but sonically, it seems interesting.

Since you mentioned Gretsch and it's got 3 PU's... You can always get a TV Jones filtertron in a dogear mount to put in one position if you want:

Hmmm, I'll be curious to see that. TBH, I've never owned a Bigsby-equipped guitar, and I somehow assumed that they all used a tune-o-matic type of bridge. Looking at the Gretsch Ajusto-Matic I admit that I can hardly imagine how it could work better than a tune-o-matic - it's very similar as far as I can tell. At any rate, I'll figure it out. :)

And remember if the Bigs is too stiff or not stiff enough you can easily replace the spring. I actually prefer a Bigs BECAUSE it's usually stiffer. Of course I'm no dive bomber. I simply like to put a little warble on the end of a phrase.

For the moment, I'll only be doing studio work with it AND using it sparingly, a bit like you do OlPal, so I'm thinking that I shouldn't have too much problems with it, unless it's really lame to the point of being unusable. So far, I've been using my strat to overdub that stuff, but the Fender sound doesn't really match what I have in mind. And I'm expecting/hoping that the Bigsby will be quite stiff - it's exactly what I want. Bat - Thanks a million for those links! According to FedEx, the guitar has left the facility at 9:30 ish and is on its way to me. :)

You can avoid a lot of Bigsby problems by doing a couple of simple things. Get some really thin Teflon oil. They used to sell it at the local shop and it comes in a small pen. A tiny drop on each saddle piece when you change strings. Wipe off any extra. Another saddle issue is the slots that people file into the saddle pieces. If the slots on the saddle pieces have any burrs, or if it's not cut for the string size, then it's going to bind or catch string windings. I replace the ABR bridge with one that's not slotted. Never a problem with string spacing or sliding. There's more tension on the saddle pieces than on a wrap around bridge. The nut is really important and has to be well cut. I also use a drop of Teflon oil in the nut slots. The saddle pieces and the nut are the most important things in having a good vibrato system. The steps I mentioned will also help with tuning issues on any guitar.

Mandy is here. :) No picture can do this guitar justice. I'll have to get used to the wider neck again, but that won't be a problem. The action needs to be taken down a notch and, as some of you guys mentioned, that logo on the pickguard has some issues. Otherwise, the guitar is actually pretty flawless and I love the sound of it. :) Fresh strings, a few minor adjustments and this thing will absolutely rock.
