The story about Anvil brought a tear to my eye: http://anvilthestoryofanvil.com/ And as a Norwegian I have to mention "Once Upon A Time In Norway" about Mayhem (the guys known for killing and church burnings and stuff) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7h9XzRdFIhc - Weirdest thing is that I'm from the same city as the guy who got killed and I was once in a band that used the same rehearsal space that the old Mayhem used under a barn, shown in the movie. And the bass player in one of my bands used to be their drum tech And since I'm already all about metal: Metal, a Head Bangers Journey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzMNuGwGW7g And that naturally brings me to Take One, The Swedish House Mafia http://take-one-movie.com/ - really liked that one. Note how they sit in a huge, well equiped studio and bang out tunes on their Macbooks And not stricktly a documentary, but the Vulgar Video from Pantera was what made me want to be a rock star!!! He he...

Jind Good choices. I'd have to add "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage" to the list as it's the first real documentary about one of my favorite bands, demonstrating what it takes for a band to have longstanding appreciation and respect from other artists and fans alike.
Ah, cool! That's one I keep forgeting to watch. Thanks for the reminder! And the recomendation. I like Rush a bit on and off but they always impress me! I'll save it for this weekend

I also enjoyed Rush in Rio. I found it interesting to see how they responded to finding themselves suddenly surrounded by 40,000 of their closest friends.

The Rutles and Bad News are both great fun. Bad News actually came just before Spinal Tap. Although I can't seem to connect like others to his music "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" is a pretty neat look at an 'outsider-artist'.

I don't have as much viewage as some of you, so I'll mention all that I remember. I liked them all. Gimme Shelter. Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Woodstock. Let It Be. The Last Waltz. Beatles Anthology. There have been a few on the Bio channel that I liked, can't remember all the names.

Another very good choice - The Funk Brothers are certainly a fantastic group musicians responsible for some of the greatest music ever. Well worth watching. Big thumbs up.

Except for some of the questionable choices covering the classics... Bootsy Collins' cover of Cool Jerk was the BOMB in my opinion. Did I ever tell anyone I know one of the trombone players in that documentary? He appears a few times (very briefly) in the second half as it was not a one night affair and the orchestra is not the same throughout the entire film.

I particularly enjoyed one I saw recently called "Natural Wonders of the Maghreb - An Expedition through Morocco's Earth History". Another classic is "Who built Stonehenge" although that does focus on other things other than the rock so I'm not sure that qualifies.

A couple of good ones I watched lately. 1)Who's Harry Nilsson and why is everybody talking about him. Thoughtful, funny, and heartbreaking. 2) The Union About the recording of the album by Elton John and Leon Russell. Very intimate setting in the recording studio. Cool scene of Brian Wilson recording harmony parts one right after another. Leon almost dies during the making of this, but comes back and soldiers on. Randy

I collect rock, music and recording documentaries and have maybe 50 or so. Always on the lookout for new additions so these threads are welcome. I think the best one of all is Peter Bogdanovich's "Runnin' Down a Dream", about, of course, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Here's one you may have missed: "Heavy Metal in Baghdad". If you liked the Story of Anvil (and who didn't?) you'll like this one.

I've seen that one as well bitflipper - it's a really good one and shows that for music, some will do what it takes to get the songs they hear in their heads out, whatever it takes. Big thumbs up for this one. If ever you think being a musician is hard, getting gigs is difficult, keeping a band together seems like work, watch this - it will put it in perspective.

I will watch it again now I think
