Rock and a Hard Place - Acoustic pop with a twist of Latin

Hi Folks,

Here is something I had written a while ago and just got around to recording it recently. Although I was going to scrap it and start again, I said I would get peoples honest opinion on it first (anything).I had envisaged it being finished and feel it does have some kind of potential. Its an acoustic song but has that spanish/latin feel to it.

This does have a ton of potential.

You might think about giving the melody a bit more staccato phrasing to work better in the beats.

On the chorus, it is just screaming out for castanets or similar perc to answer the rock and the hard place words, which could stand to be separated a quarter note more.

    I would ditch the tamborines.

I would add Spanish horns, acoustic bass, timbalis, agogo, and a counter-melody.

    Cian,

Cool song.   I think you need some more latin percussion to take it full-on latin pop style.  Bass would be a little more syncopated with a more latin rhythm.  Maybe add some piano for color, some horns (trumpets), nylon-string acoustic, etc...  Really a good song.  I would keep it acoustic-based as is, maybe just latin-up the percussion and add some other latin spices.  Good stuff.

    Regards

Listening on the laptop speakers, I like it. Needs castanets :-)

All you need is love, just ask the Beatles?

Love that melody and your voice!  Sounds like the guys have some ideas for how to add to it, but I agree...great potential here.  :)

Thanks all, this song was initially written as more pop rock but when I added the cajon the latin feel just came through.

I think the general consensus is to really direct the track towards the latin genre full on.

James, thanks for you valued to the point input. Find it a little hard to change it up at this stage,my mind is set in its way.Ill check if I have some of those sounds in my library. Im not 100% on what you have in mind with the rock and hard place words moved a quarter with the answering percussion.

Thanks mark, although there is piano and spanish type guitar in it, They do need to play more of a part in the track aswell as other latin sounds. Based on our last endeavour, you could muster up a damn good backing track for that ya know!

Thank also band on the run and Janet for your comments.

I do believe the song has potential myself. I would particularly like to know did any of the melody part of the song that just didnt work for you or you think should be changed?

    Hi, Cian,

Excellent song, very cool blend of pop-rock with a unique Latin flavor!  Your vocals are fantastic, as always, and the acoustic guitar, piano and background percussion sound great together.

Very nice work, have a good one!

i like it, the sparse nature of the arrangement works well, gives it a live feel...excellent vocal and lyrics, of course. you could really ramp this up in terms of instrumentation as James said, but it works well as is...superb!
