But it's odd that no one can come up with anything new?
It must be hard to market synths these days.

I do not believe that this synth is anything at all like the original Jupiter, which was analog.

It's a new synth with a recycled name...

Apparently it will raise your cholesterol, or something like that:
The JUPITER-80 nods to its past with lethal, multi-layered SuperNATURAL synthesizer tones so fat you'll need a knife to cut through it,

To all the non believers. I am someone who used to have a room full of analog synths and the JP8 was included among them. As plug in versions of many of these instruments came into the light I was in the fortunate position of being able to test and compare them to the actual machines they were emulating. In many cases the plugins actually sound identical to the original instruments. eg Jupiter 8V by Arturia.

This new Jupiter 80 looks like a fine instrument actually. I am sure it is fully capable of emulating the original JP8. As long as the original waveforms are present and the signal flow can be setup the same way as the JP8 then I am confident that it will in fact be able to create very similar patches.

But as you investigate further one will see that the Jupiter 80 is in fact way more advanced than the original JP8 taking it much further into more interesting sound creating territory. It looks like a fine instrument, quite large as well. As long as the keyboard is a nice controller to play, then it could be used as your main mother controller and as a poweful synth engine to compliment other instruments you might have.

The original sound of anlog synths is just so easy to create these days with great plugins. I don't have one analog synth now. They can be more trouble than they are worth and the sound is just so easy to emulate digitally. Stop being concerned with the tools and get on with making music. The better the music the more irrelevent the tools become.

But Jeff, don't you miss having to tune your analog synths???

    (Kidding!)

    NO.

I used to have a big Oberheim synth and I had to let it warm up for 20 minutes before I could really use it. And sometimes when you did the auto tune it left oscillators out because they could not be pulled into line. At least the Oberheim dropped the out of tune oscillators out, many synths did not!

I had to have all the screws out so I could lift the lid and when I pushed the voice boards down hard they would suddenly tuneup again. And every 6 months I had to take all the boards out and clean the pins and contacts and go through the lineup process. Not for the faint hearted.

Yes it was a fat sound. Then an amazing (Oberheim) plugin came along that sounded just like it.

I must admit the Roland synths gave me the least problem in terms of tuning. But even the Juno 106 has got issues. There was a defect in the many of the voice chips then that are only now starting to fail after 30 years. There are voice/filter chip clones but they are expensive and you have to be a pretty fine technician to install them well.

Oh I have no doubt that the Jupiter 80 will be a nice piece of hardware.  I just believe they should have given it another name.  A virtual analog synth that includes authentic instrument sounds. Hmm.
