Roland Sound Canvas VA support - where??
I know this has little to do with MC, but I really need to find somewhere that I can get real support for the Sound Canvas VA software, which I want to use with MC. The Roland Tribes forums seem to be pretty dead, and I can't find a contact point for Roland themselves. I seriously need some questions answered, so if anyone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'll name my next car after you or something, lol. Thanks!

Would you mind sharing what you were asking, and how they replied? I am thinking of buying that one.

Sure. This link provides all the contact info needed: https://www.roland.co.uk/company/contact_us You won't be disappointed with SCVA itself. In the 90's I had the SC-88 hardware, but never upgraded to Pro or SC-8820. This software contains ALL of it. The downside with MC or Sonar, as mentioned on the Roland site is, "you cannot use control changes to make correct bank selections and program changes". I'm still working on how to deal with that, but it CAN be done in another DAW that I won't mention publicly because this is, after all, the MC forum. :) However, even in the DAW where things work fully, there is an issue with tone map changing that doesn't seem to be working well. In any case, if your main concern (like myself) is to have use of the Sound Canvas sounds, it's 100% spot on, and is still quite functional in MC if the limitations aren't a huge issue for you. Oh, and it's compatible with Mac OS X 10.8.5 or later; for Windows, only 7 SP1, 8/8.1, and 10 are supported.

Thanks! I had also read about those issues. Glad it's working well for you.

Update on the link for Roland support: If you live outside the UK, good luck. The only recourse for Canadians is the Roland Tribes forum, which hasn't responded to two of my posts for 9 days. Nothing. And if you use the contact form, it rejects you without a UK postal code. The UK community forum is not taking new registrations this time. I paid $182CAD for their product. Thanks for nothing.

Out of curiosity, why would you buy Sound Canvas as software? The thing that made the Sound Canvas great was it's plug and play general midi implementation. Other than that, it sounds terrible compared to what is available today. You'd be much better off getting a modern soft synth such as Omnisphere or similar, IMO. Regards, Dan

Valid question. Here's my answer. :) Throughout the late 80's & 90's I created upwards of 400 MIDI files with Sound Canvas (first the SC-55 and then the 88), for backup at solo gigs or when I had one other guitar player or singer with me. When I retired from performing in '97, I never kept up with the tech, and the MIDIs have sat there for almost 20 years. Now I'm back to performing, and for a quick restart I need to have my MIDIs back with the same sounds they were created with. Otherwise, there'd be a whole l lot of work remixing/tweaking the new sounds of new tech. Eventually, I'll use the newer stuff, but this gets me up and running much faster for now.

In that case, I'd suggest finding an old Sound Canvas on eBay...you'll probably have better luck using it that way. Regards, Dan

I looked, but couldn't find any in good working order for less than the SCVA software. Especially considering the current USD>CAD exchange rates. But yeah, I would LOVE to have the hardware again.

hello (just read this post) i use the scva too to play my midi files. yep mc is incompatible with scva. (only 32 bit version of scva will work and map changes wont work, so gs midi files will be played like normal gm midi files) but if u just want to playback midi files with the sound canvas va there is no need to buy cubase. with 3 freeware tools scva will work including full bank changes u need: loop midi to create a virtual midi port http://www.tobias-erichse../software/loopmidi.html savihost to load the scva (works with 64 bit scva) http://www.hermannseib.com/savihost.htm vanbascos karaoke midi palyer to playback midi files (i recommend this player because it can send a gs reset command to the vst) http://www.vanbasco.com/products.html in this video a guy tells u how to do this for dosbox emulator to play old dosgames with scva but for vanbascos karaoke player its the same https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WumRboSfn90 in vanbascos karaoke player select "gs" as reset modus so all scva settings will be resettet before each midi file is loaded. hope this will help a bit in germany sc va costs 115 euro, but a used sc8820 costs over 300 euro and there are no usb drivers from roland for windows 7 and higher for it scva sounds exactly the same

Greetings, Peter0815, Great post with all the links. One exception, concerning GM/GS. Alot depends on the SYSX data in the Midi file. A Midi file sometimes has no popup request to load the SYSX messages and will play as GS. A GM environment may or may not sound correct. SONAR allows writing in a popup tag while writing SYSX data in the Midi file as either GM, GM2 or GS. Next time the popup will appear. About Roland Sound Canvas VA: The sound engine will change to either GM, GM2 or GS depending on the SYSX data in the Midi file when played in all SONAR, loopMIDI and SAVIHost. I played several different Midi files and all changed the SCVA sound engine to the corresponding Mode except one Midi file. That Midi file is GS and didn't generate the SYSX popup request. SCVA still played it in GS mode. That is one exception which shows how SYSX data works. Before finding this thread I posted this for everyone. Check this link: http://forum.cakewalk.com/SONAR-and-Roland-Sound-Canvas-VA-m3400921.aspx Sincerely, David R.
