Roland UM-1 -- won't work with Windows 8.1

It stopped working when I upgraded Windows from 8 to 8.1, and I, for the life of me, can't get it to work again. I've tried two driver downloads, um1_w81d_v101.zip (from Roland) and UM1G_Win8_32and64bit_v100.zip (from here), and neither of them work for me. After I plug the UM-1 into my USB (per prompt in setup program), nothing happens, the USB light on the UM-1 doesn't light up, and the "Next" button in the setup program stays grayed out. 
 
Can anyone recommend a download file that works, or an alternative to the UM-1 that will work with Windows 8.1?

    From the Driver download page..
     
    * This product cannot be used with a USB 3.0 port that is not compatible with USB 2.0 specification.
    * If this product does not work correctly when connected to a USB 3.0 port, you will need to connect it to a USB 2.0 port.
    * Even if connected to a USB 3.0 port, the performance of the product will not change.

    * This driver cannot be used in a virtual Windows environment, such as Hyper-V or Virtual PC.
    * Mac computers running Microsoft Windows are not supported.

     
    It is the same driver for Win8 and Win8.1  You need to check the USB drivers in your system which may have changed.

    Thanks Mekashi. I tried all the USB ports with no luck. I searched the web for USB drivers for Asus, and found nothing. Has anyone on this forum experienced this issue? Can it be resolved?
