If I had my way we'd all be born with with diamond-coated high-grade stainless tungsten carbide teeth designed to last at least three average lifetimes no matter what happened to them.

As it happens I had three molars extracted last week. They basically fell apart, the consequence of the rubbish dentist my parents took me to in the sixties and his habit of filling anything and everything several times, probably whether it needed it or not. Anaesthetic an optional extra. So the teeth were just a thin shell packed with mercury filling on top of mercury filling and eventually just collapsed.

Removal painless, a bit of soreness for a few days afterwards and an immediate dental plate inserted into the gap to get used to. Implants an option but for thousands rather than hundreds, totalling nearly ten times the money for a plate, so plate it is.

Compared to the one root canal job I've had done the whole process has been quick, almost painless and easy. The root canal was horrible and the tooth still needed extracting a year or so later.

My gob is also full of 1960's fillings.

And sweets were not so much on the agenda back then. I seem to remember that Friday was Mars Bar day and my mum would shop up a single bar and me and my brother would share.

BUT, might not have been so heavy on the sweets, but my mum  eventually told me the story that, when we were generally being a bit of a PITA, she would rustle up a sugar butty and we'd be happy as Larry, for a bit.

I'm still a slave to the evil white powder........

Ah, them olden daze. Sunday afternoons was chocolate bars and a film on telly. I don't remember having sweets during the week, but mum would always do a hot dessert, her bread-and-butter pudding was splendid.

I had a terrible dentist in the early '70s, a real butcher. He used to read the newspaper for about 10 minutes while I sat in the chair, waiting. I still remember his name: Mr Everard...

Blimey! Traumatised!

I hated the dentist back in those days. Once I had left home I never went to the dentist for fourteen years. Fortunately, apart from fourteen years of plaque and a touch of bad breath (it was my missus that made me go), no real damage was done, so I must have been doing something right...

Heh, similar story Andy. Took me many years to go back to a dentist, and when he'd had a look he said ''Well...you've got a gob like a graveyard, but they'll last you a few years yet''  Had one filling and a good clean up that day.

Yes I can feel for you James ....
I would go with the extraction only because I have never had a Root Canal last for more that a couple of years before it cracked or broke ....
I've got a few things going on my self ..
I had some loose teeth on the bottom , the dentist put a little rod of metal the whole length behind them for support, that's been holding up very well ...
Due to age , bone loss and smoking , a few of my top teeth  are getting very loose ...
I don't know what I'm gonna do with that issue yet ...It is a tough one and it is causing me concern ...

hang in there ,

Re: Root canal, or extraction? 2017/04/28 03:14:28 (permalink)
I had a root canal done when I was 25 or so. About 12 years later, I had this recurring abscess right up top of the gum, near my nose. Went to a dentist and she told me that the tooth was still alive. The root canal apparently didn't take! So I had to have it done again. And since I'm a Geordie and therefore hard as nails, I had it done by a student at the NY dental school.  Dirt cheap as well. While I was there, she started telling me about lots of other stuff I should have done. So I said just go for it, whatever you need to do. I had to have an onlay, a filling and something else which I can't remember. And then she starts telling me you know, you have pretty good teeth with good spacing, they're just worn down a bit and one of the front ones was a little crooked. So before you know it I'm shelling out for some veneers as well, which were ridiculously cheap compared to a normal dentist. The whole thing took forever because the dental students aren't allowed to use assistants, they have to do everything themselves, and they have to keep stopping to go get a dental professor (did I get that right?) to check their work. So many appointments, and some of them 2 hours long. But now I'm in possession of a pretty good set of white chompers. I frigging hate going to the dentist though.

Yep that's me alright - headbutt first, ask questions later....

Auf Weidersehen Pet was such a great show, I've been watching it all again recently. Made a huge impression on me as a kid because it was the first time that real, unfiltered Geordie accents had been used in a TV show. I used to see Jimmy Nail occasionally in my local corner store, very pleasant chap in real life. I think he got the part after threatening the casting director.

Well if by "met" you mean was offered a Gregg's sausage roll sample by her on the street, after which she ran away when I recognized her, then yes. I guess the acting word dried up for her.

Edit: I just looked her up and apparently she was in Byker Grove as well! So I guess it wasn't all bad....

I was in the same class as Caspar Berry from Byker Grove. I think he's a motivational speaker or something now.

Just an opinion from a medical jock... Think most of the advice here is good.

If you and your dentist feel that the foundation and function of the tooth is needed for quality of life, and if the bone structure beneath is deemed to be in tact, root canal is not a bad option even if costly. If done properly, will last for many years since the root canal recedes and dies off with the ravages of time anyway. All of your teeth are undergoing a programmed root canal. New growth and communication with the tooth petrifies as we grow older. Means nature imposes a time response root canal on all of us over the long haul.

If the tooth is not needed for chewing up stuff, get the damn thing yanked out. Cheaper, quick, socket will heal up in a couple months entirely minus a possible few reactive nerve connections that will protest the extraction.

Thanks John, the rather pretty young Iraqi dentist lady pulled the bugger out 2 days ago. Took her several goes and about 15 minutes, but she got it all in one piece. A bit of soreness yesterday but seems fine now. My teeth don't look great, but they haven't given me much trouble, this is the first extraction in about 40 years.

Alluding to your dentist comment above, I had one that I firmly believed enjoyed causing pain.  His name?  Dr. Bliss!

Every time I was there he would spend the bulk of the visit gossiping with the hygienist...
