Rotate guitars?

How often do you rotate guitars?

Last weekend I was putting some guitars away to prepare for cutting a window in my studio wall, and I decided to pull a few others out to take over to the play room for a while.

I really enjoy playing different guitars, string gauges, next profiles, setups etc. and try to mix it up every few weeks or month or two. The lack of consistency makes for a good excuse of my stellar mediocrity. :-)

The most recent to come of the shelf are my wife's 'Merican Standard Strat and my old '92 Gibson SG special. Both are "players" guitars and have been the ones I've taken out to gigs in the past.

I'm looking forward to playing the SG this morning. The Strat turned out to be a great surprise. I think I did a setup on it just before I stored it last time.

The SG is an old friend but we haven't *visited* in a long while.

Anyways, do you guys favor a lifetime relationship with "the one" guitar or do you like to mix it up?

best regards,
mike

My Tobias and I have a very intimate relationship for the past 16 years and if I need to get another bass it would be to have a 4 string to goof around with or if I need a bass with different gauge strings on a permanent basis.

I have more than one guitar tho... But I consider my self a bass player.

    Have fun with your re-visits

Well, since it was only recently that I acquired a second acoustic and a second electric...... this has not been an issue for me.  It is hard to believe that I have been a guitarist for decades and made my living with music for a number of years and I only had one guitar.

I bought a second guitar when my SG was stolen because I had gigs to play. I got the SG back and eventually traded the second guitar for an acoustic.

I've had one electric and one acoustic for years.

Now that I have 2 of each..... I have put the older ones away for a time as I get to know the characteristics of the new members of the family.

eventually the old ones will come out of storage and back into use.

Mike I numerous Strats, Teles, a LP, Guild, Carvin and original.
4 or 5 Strats are special and I keep them stored.

Only one is set-up for a specific use. A Strat with a hex pup for
    midi.
All the others I grab as I want. I rotate one by my easy chair
at no paricular interval. It's for playing with whatever is on the
TV. Don't watch it much but it's fun when I do. I think commercial
music use to be much more catchy.

Each one has it's own personality and I enjoy that.

While I don't own any expensive guitars, I do have a variety of setups and each guitar I do own is different from all the others so I rotate guitars quite often and do a lot of mixing and matching when writing and recording.  I have the Classic Vibe Strat and Tele, all single coils, but the Stratocaster has a Rosewood fretboard while the Tele is tried and true Maple.  I have my Xaviere XV-560 semi hollowbody with P90s which get quite a bit of use, and then there's my two Ibanez guitars, a shred worthy RGR420EX with upgraded pickups - I put Dimarzio Crunch Lab and LiquidFire combo of pickups in which has worked out great for my heavier stuff and my Ibanez ART300, basically a Singlecut LP style guitar with Active humbuckers also for my more rocking moments.

I also have an older Ovation acoustic that gets some use, but these days I've been using my wife's Luna Muse acoustic more often as I really quite like it's sound a bit more than my Ovation lately.  It's also a very comfortable neck for my smallish hands - I've been plagued with wide palms with short fingers unfortunately.

    when i break a string, i rotate.

til i've broken a string on every guitar.

then, once they all have a broken string, i change the whole entire lot at once, and start over.

    I only have 5 basses and 4 guitars (2 electric, 2 acoustic).

I don't rotate them. I use them when they are needed.

Probably true, but I've suffered from long finger envy for most of my 30+ years playing.  I know, I know - you large hand players give lip service to saying size does not matter, but I see all these huge hand guitarists flying around the fretboard and can't help but wonder - how much easier would it be with larger hands?

They don't generally get consciously rotated. A bunch are sitting out on stands, and occasionally one or two of these will get put away and replaced.

Generally I just play what calls to me at the moment, and certain ones tend to call more than others. But sometimes I'll think, "Boy, I haven't played that one in a looooong time!" and make an effort to play it. Which often brings a smile.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I've pared my collection down to 2 electrics and an acoustic. I go thru phases where I only play my custom Strat for weeks, then I'll grab the Les Paul and play it for weeks. No real reason for changing other than I might want to work on a specific song. The Alvarez is always on a stand next to my chair.

Pro Tone?  Don't know.  In the late 90s, Fender came out with the Closet Classics - a much less abused but antiqued guitar in the vein of the Relics.

It is Fender Custom Shop and you can totally tell the difference between it and an American Standard.

I'm like Herb (before he got his 2nd guitars)....I have 1 electric & 1 (classical) acoustic. I like both of them and my rotation is somewhat limited . But, I try to squeeze out every bit of tone that I possibly could with the given limitation.

I'm looking to get a JT Variaxe (soon) and possibly won't need to rotate at all.

I am the world's lousiest "guitar care taker".  I have most all of mine on stands or hanging in the studio...even the acoustics and, like Bapsi mentioned above, just use what I need when I need it.  I do have some humidification in the room but not enough and not consistent enough.  I'm sure all my Taylors hate my guts.  But at least they all get played frequently.

Stagg LP is the go to gigging guitar (SD Phat Cats and a Bigsby). Standby is a HH American Strat and a 5 string Tele copy with an HB for slide. Many others I would love to bring out but through lack of space can't.

When I travel (frequently) i take a 45 Euro accoustric with a standard neck and small body (bought in Shanghai). Sounds ok.

    My feelings exactly.

If the aging process actually makes a guitar sound or play better I could understand it to some extent.

But to me it would be like having a shiny new Steinway Grand delivered and then taking an electric sander to it

Are there any other new instruments you can buy that are artificially made to look like they've been gigged to buggery?

This assumes one has enough guitars to rotate. I do not, and as of the break-in here last fall, I no longer even have "a" guitar, as the thief thought mine should now be his.

I do however have an empty guitar stand that makes for a fine dust collector, and a crappy amp that I suppose I can now use for Karioke.

I recently bought a Big Tex 1953 Tele repro
I can't play Tele's. For some odd reason, and yes, this is very VERY odd, when I strap them on, the way the body is shaped, it causes me great abdominal pain followed by severe gastrointestinal disturbances of the gaseous and non-gaseous kind. I've had my guts ripped out and worked on a couple times. I'm thinking they weren't quite put back in right and somethings rubs the wrong way possibly.

The new American Standards now have the gut cut (which some find damn near blasphemous), it's sole purpose is to avoid gastrointestinal disturbances in the solid and not so solid forms.

Perhaps you could try one of them.
