Rough Mix Of Song
Hello all This is a first mix of a song written by Barry Jay and Dottie Corley. The artist is Nelly Rene.....and I did all of the production in my home studio using Sonar X3. Will be adding more instruments...just want to get sine ideas on what could be better. THANKS http://wp.me/a4oCax-1W

Is this wayward wings? I would tune Nelly a little on the lower passages, when she gets up in her range, she's bringing it... "Really bringing it." Or maybe pitch the song up a key or two, and record her doing the lower parts, and then pitch those down and import back in to the project (that's another range trick) I really only noticed it in the beginning. This chick has some great pipes man!

Nice. Well written and produced song overall, albeit probably a tad generic (guilty of that myself), but a few key additional instruments with a unique sound and riff can help that. Her voice is excellent, needs a tune up in places though. I reckon a male duet would work well with this song to help break the monotony of the female vocal. A string would fit easily in there. Pro sound mate, well done Cian

Nice tune with a really nice vocal. Sure there is some room for improvement, more instruments or something but with raw talent like this, you are running downhill. I love Nelly's voice. What a great name! Really beautiful song.

Not much to add... Good vocal performance and tone, nice harmonies, and the arrangement works OK. If anything I'd bring up the instrumentation in the chorus; e.g., more "smack" from the snare and maybe a ride cymbal, a small string section might sound nice, etc. Pretty typical pop stuff, but I think it'd work. But mix-wise you're doing a very nice job!

Thanks guys. This is really not "mixed" yet. I mixed the background vocals so Nelly could hear them. I mixed down the instruments to a single track before recording vocals, for cpu reasons. Once the guitar is added Sunday I will tweak it some more. THANKS

Agree with Stevev comments. Something needs to help this song/production stand out. It is all good but very tame. Maybe it could break down into just vocal and 1 instrument at some point? On the last segment, the electric guitar distortion seems to cloud up the vocal in that if the tones were clean, the emotion of the lead vocal might be enhanced (just MO). Very nice arrangement.

Some relief from the constant quarter note groove would be great; some sort of rhythmic unison figure leading into the choruses would be effective.

this song has the potential to sound very commercial and maybe hold its own in that arena .. i think you have to do something here that is gonna throw some more balls into the tune earlier on ... what ever you happen to do ….own the tune , make it undeniably yours and then take everybody else to school Kenny

Thanks Kenny, This was a male country song that we had the writers change up a little to make it a female song. Trying to go in a kind of acoustic/pop direction, but not being able to play guitar makes it a little difficult. The track you heard is just my attempts at acoustic using the RealGuitar VST. I have a buddy coming to put some real guitar on it soon. Was supposed to be here this past Sunday but couldnt make it. I also like the idea of stripping it down a bit in sections. I may break it down to acoustic guitar and vocal at the start of verse 2, then come in strong with the intstruments midway thru the verse. Will play with it much more once my guitarist puts his stuff down. Thanks again for the listens and suggestions.
